Decorating a large room can be quite a treat to the interior decorator, because of the decorative potential the extra space provides. A larger space allows for experimentation in how the furniture is arranged in a way that smaller rooms can't afford. In the best-decorated large rooms, there is a feeling of rooms within a room. If the room is divided up into several sections, it has great visual interest and a better traffic flow. Instructions as follows: Firstly, decide on a decorating style and determine how you are going to use the space. Determining this element helps you on a couple of fronts. Not only do you know what kind of furnishings you'll require, but it will also help you decide on a color scheme. Many decorating styles have color schemes already naturally associated with them, helping you narrow down these choices. Secondly, set a focal point. The best-decorated rooms have a focal point, which helps direct the eye into the room. It also helps you determine the flow of traffic, because it helps you position your furniture. Some normal focal points in a room include a built-in bookcase, a fireplace, a grand piano or focal points that you create yourself like a wall gallery/entertainment area. Thirdly, take advantage of area rugs to set one section of the room apart from the others. A rug with a wild pattern like a zebra print will pull the eye to that section of the room, helping to emphasize the focal point. Set the rug in front of the focal point and position the couch, chairs and coffee table around the rug. Fourthly, use colors to create room sections. For example, if you know that you want a hobby area, a TV-watching space and a game area, emphasize a different color in each area. To do this, select a couple of different colors as your primary decorating colors, and use each color as the main color in one of the areas. You'll accent each area with accessories in the colors of the other areas. Fifthly, break up the space using room dividers. Although you can set up actual room dividers, items like a large free-standing bookcase, a bench or a table, or a folding photo screen placed between one area and another also will work. Sixthly, gravitate toward large patterns on the couch, chair and other accessories. This will help the furniture and accessories not get lost in the large space. Seventhly, make sure the furniture is proportionate to the room. You can make a slight exception this rule if you place a few larger pieces around the room and if you divide the room up into smaller spaces using room dividers. The smaller spaces will take on the qualities of a smaller room. Eighthly, provide adequate lighting for each of the areas of the room. Ninthly, add interesting accessories for to express your personality. This might include a dress dummy decorated with an antique costume, old wooden signs, a steamer trunk as a coffee table, or painted coffee table with stenciling, a decorative plate collection or a display of shadowboxes.
