He was born in Braham and later moved to St. Paul in the Macalaster-Groveland and Frog town locations. While he grew up with a passion for art, he was not recognized as an artist until after serving the country in World War II. Leroy Neiman attended the Art Institute of Chicago on the G.I. Bill after his military service. After he completed his studies, he stayed on as a professor for ten years at the program. He met Hugh Heffner, and the two became friends and struck a deal where Neiman would begin to illustrate the magazine’s regular column on the party jokes pages. His association with playboy continued on and off for more than fifty years. He created the famous and much loved femlin character who is widely collected by art connoisseurs today. This launched Neiman’s career and gave him a platform of public awareness and acceptance to move on and do other things with his art that would also become embraced by the masses. Starting in 1960, Neiman began to travel the world and paint famous scenery and people partaking in leisure activities. The later paintings would go on to define his career and make him a household name. He began covering a wide range of athletic events, including the Olympics, the Super Bowl, Wimbledon, the World Series, the Ryder Cup, the Master’s Golf tournament, the Kentucky Derby, and many more. He also captured night life scenes with a special emphasis on jazz, gambling, and night life. Leroy Neiman paintings also feature famous global landmarks including the Eiffel tower and the Brooklyn Bridge. He also pained a number of street scenes of varying locations. Many art critics believe Neiman’s extreme popularity among collectors is due to the subject matter of his original artwork. He died in New York City, the place he lived and worked for his late life at the age of 91.
