When exposed to humid environments for long, films tend to develop molds, fungus and mildew. These microorganisms have the power to irreversibly damage your films. Usually, they start colonizing the outer edges, eventually working their way into the emulsion. You can always repair a growth on the outside edges, but once the growth gets onto the emulsion, it is usually damaging enough to render your film obsolete. If the fungi, mold or mildew growth occurs on the outer edges, then you will need to clean it thoroughly to prevent progression before getting to the emulsion. While you can use chemicals to get rid of these microorganisms from the emulsion, you need to note that these chemicals usually erase images as well. If you get it before the film is severely damaged, then you may need to clean it up before you can copy 8mm to DVD. Always measure the shrinkage before transferring your film to DVD format. A 0.8% to 1% shrinkage carries the possibility of further damage to your film when uploaded to the projector. A 2% shrinkage can virtually render 8mm to DVD transfer impossible even with the best of professionals. A Shrinkage Gauge is used to measure shrinkage, but you can also do this manually by comparing 100 frames of the film to 100 frames of new film. When taking your films for transfer, find out how the video transfer professional is going to prepare and recondition your film. A good video transfer lab should have cleaning and conditioning equipment that will perfectly work with your old films as long as they are repairable. The video transfer technician should also be familiar with how to handle molds, mildew and fungus as well as tape shrinkage. Old films contain precious memories of important events and even loved ones. Cleaning and condition film might take some time. However, if this is what is standing between you and successful 8mm to DVD transfer, then you better do it.
