It won’t be wrong to say that Sridevi couldn't have asked for a better comeback than English Vinglish and that director Gauri Shinde couldn't have got a befitting protagonist for the directorial debut! Gauri’s fine directorial skills and Sridevi’s love for the camera gel like hand in the glove, making English Vinglish a film that touches your heart in every frame, without becoming overtly preachy or excessively dramatic. If you have watched the trailer, you’ll know that English Vinglish is the story of a woman’s endeavor to let go of all her inhibitions and apprehensions, win over her insecurities and learn English. And ‘making it click in the foreign land with a language that’s not your first’ as the premise, the film is on everyone’s must-watch list already, because each one of us can relate to the plot. But, English Vinglish is beyond the regular struggle and win tale. With a taut script and smooth narrative, the film dwells on a fine balance of emotions, drama and comic timing. You empathize with Shashi when her hubby looks down upon her and her ultra modern daughter hesitates taking her to Parent Teacher Meeting, you feel her pain when the café woman makes her life miserable for not being able to choose between still and sparkling water and you want to celebrate her joy not only when she gives her first speech but also when she learns her first English word! Just like R.Balki’s previous productions including Cheeni Kum and Paa, English Vinglish is exemplar of a perfect matrimony of fine directorial skills balanced and stellar performance. In an age when shooting at a foreign locale is no big deal, Gauri shows you New York city not as if you were born there but from the eyes of a first-timer, who is a middle-class-laddoo-making-entrepreneur. Right from Shashi’s anxiety about flying to a foreign country all alone to her child-like excitement for the sky-scrapers to her watching English DVDs to polish her language – Gauri has kept everything very real and that’s the beauty of the film. One of the reasons for being able to get that realism can be the fact that it was Gauri’s mother, who inspired her to make English Vinglish as she had been in such a situation. Talking about performances, Sridevi has surpassed all other comeback queens of recent times. You find her a little reserved in the beginning. But as the plot moves, you’ll know why she’s like that. After all, how long can you tolerate being at the butt of jokes by your own family. She brings Shashi to life and you forget that she hasn't faced the camera for past 14 years. Even in the de-glamourised-minimal-make-up-cotton saree look, she looks beautiful. No wonder at 49, Sridevi was tagged as India’s Meryl Streep when the film was screened at the Toronto Film Festival. Many Sridevi fans might miss the chulbuli Chandni and over-the-top Sridevi of Judaai, but we’re sure you’ll enjoy this matured shade of this talented actress. Supporting cast including southern star Priya Anand as Shashi’s understanding niece is impressive and Sulbha Deshpande as her loving mother-in-law is endearing. Aadil Hussain as her ever-taunting husband, who considers Shashi was born to make laddoos plays his part well. Sridevi’s daughter Navika Kotia manages to draw your hatred with her promising acting skills, but it is her cute and humorous son played by Shivansh Kotia, who wins your heart. Wondering why we aren't talking about Amitabh Bachchan, because we are still regretting that he did just a cameo – but a great one at that! Sridevi's chemistry with her french classmate is captured sensitively. However, having sub-titles for his conversations would have made things more interesting. Music wise, the film has a great title track (listen to English-Vinglish title song here), Manhattan song is full of spirit. While most of the songs are in the background, the film would have been equally entertaining without music also. Dialogues are witty as well as full of impact. English Vinglish might not make 100 crore but it will definitely win 100 crore fans for both Sridevi and Gauri Shinde. It proves that you don’t need 3D gimmicks and great item numbers to make a big come-back, all you need is the right choice of script and immense talent! So, grab your pack of pop-corn and book tickets for your entire family as this inspiring piece of cinema is a must-watch for everyone irrespective of your age, gender, religion and of course location!
