The name of Edmonton’s North Saskatchewan River comes from the Cree word kisakatchewan, which roughly means rapid waters. But it’s more than the water that’s just moving swiftly—the water crafts that frequent the river have their fair share of zipping around. The river and its recreational potential has always been the main draw of Edmonton. So for one to jump in on all this fun and action, one needs a boat. The problem with that is boats cost an arm and a leg—so it’s either you make an investment in a high-spec brand-new motor boat that will serve you well, or settle for a second hand one (alternatively, something hand-powered like a kayak would be more affordable as well). Good thing there are a multitude of boats for sale in Edmonton, and for all price ranges as well. It should be noted that the North Saskatchewan River valley parks system is the largest of its kind in all of North America. So large, that both sides of the river valley route are dotted with park stations, docks, etc. If one ever needed a reason to own a boat in Edmonton, that was it—the place is a veritable, natural water park. Given how greatly the river figures into Edmonton recreation and culture, there’s simply no shortage of boats for sale in Edmonton. And they come in different types, each with their own uses. Power boats for speed, fishing boats (obviously) for fishing, canoes, kayaks, row boats—any and all kinds of boats are being sold; which one you choose is dependent on what “floats your boat” (pun intended). When one has an idea of which kind of boat he wants, he could decide between getting it brand new or second hand. Note that just because something is pre-owned doesn’t necessarily mean the boat’s a total scrap machine. The factory-freshness of a boat aside, hopeful boaters should pick a craft that they can get the most fun of and will last them for a long time. So whether you want to go fishing in the middle of the tributary, or you want to scare the same fishes with your 50mph hydro-rocket, Edmonton’s got the goods. Come for the boat, stay for the churning kisakatchewan. Maps and routes of the river can be referred to at northsaskatchewanriverguide.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=38&Itemid=51
