The number of Indian students in foreign countries has grown three-and-a-half times between 2000 and 2009. Destinations like the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia and Paris are considered as the top countries to pursue higher education. But now, with rapid changes in economies, many other options have also opened up for students. Places like Singapore, New Zealand, and Ireland are also coming up with various career opportunities. In various countries, the Government and non-Government agencies also offer various grants, fellowships and financial aids for carrying out education programs. Requirements for studying in foreign countries - Academic qualification: Students must have Indian School Certificate (ISC or SSC) with at least five subjects for getting enrolled in undergraduate course in foreign countries.
- Financial aspect: It is essential to have a financial plan that covers the entire program, which includes tution fee, living expenses, etc.
- English proficiency: English is increasingly becoming a homily language in many international professional environments. For most schools and courses, competency in English is considered as the eligibility criteria for selection. So, one should have a good level of English understanding.
Cost saving options - Apply for scholarships: There are number of scholarships available for Indian students studying in foreign countries. Students can apply for these scholarships and get huge monetary benefit in tution fee.
- Use student discounts: Many countries offer special discounts to students. So, always bring the student ID card in shops, restaurants, and malls to avail the benefits.
- Buy international data card: Students can avoid expensive international calling charges by using a low cost internet calling service like Skype to make calls. This can only be possible with the help of 3G data cards.
- Cook food at home: Food in foreign countries is very expensive. So, it is better to cook the food at home to save money.
- Stay as paying guest: Instead of taking a room on rent, students can choose to live with host families as a paying guest (PG). This mode of living is quite economical in comparison to others.
- Get books from college library: Don’t buy each and every book. It is better to get books issued from college library for making notes. The other option is to buy second hand books, if really necessary for more references. It will also help the students to save some money.
- Buy medical and life insurance: The insurance companies provide the students with both medical and non-medical insurance coverage throughout the period of study with auto-renewal and extension facilities. It covers all the medical expenses, sponsor protection, accident cover, damages, etc.
