Oh My God is a Hindi drama / comedy movie directed by Umesh Shukla, produced by Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal. The movie features Paresh Rawal in the lead role and Akshay Kumar, Lubna Salim, Mithun Chakraborty, Poonam Jhawer, Govind Namdeo and Om Puri in supporting roles. Oh My God Movie Review: Questioning the existence of God, doubting the illogical rituals and raising a finger at the saffron-clad phony babas/gurus – has always been a sensitive issue in our country. And this week’s release OMG Oh My God dares to fiddle with all of these taboo issues, which have been plaguing India’s religious sensibilities since a long time. Kudos to director Umesh Shukla for making this bold movie that drives the message straight to the heart fearlessly. It isn't inspired by Hollywood Godliness of Bruce Almighty but remains an honest adaptation of Bhavesh Mandalia’s Gujarati play, Kanji Viruddh Kanji. OMG Oh My God isn’t a rib-tickling comedy but a well intended and sharply targeted satire - one that we have seen on Indian screen after a long time. Oh My God Movie Story: This tongue-in-cheek remark taking on the subject of organized religion that’s rampant in India is related via the tale of Kanji Bhai. Kanji Bhai is a radical nonbeliever in God, who ironically sells God and paraphernalia at his shop in Mumbai’s Chor Bazaar. He not only questions his existence but also taunts and teases others for their blind belief in the Almighty. And this troubles his wife a lot, who is a devout. Soon, tragedy strikes and in an earthquake only Kanji Bhai’s shop in the entire market collapses. KanjiBhai is on the road! Insurance company denies claim considering the damage as “Act of God.” Now, what? Helpless Kanji decides to sue God for his loss and sends out legal notice to temples as God resides there and to the fake God-men - an effeminate baba (Mithun Chakraborty), a dhoti-clad fiery pandit, Siddheshwar Maharaj (Govind Namdeo) and an eye candy in sexy Gopi Mayyia (Poonam Jhawar). Enters God – Akshay Kumar as Krishna / Bhagwan in a cool biker’s avataar! How does he help Kanji? Will he become Kanji's sarthi in this modern day Mahabharat or is he actually behind Kanjbhai’s ill-fate? Find out as you watch the film. The best moments of the film take place in the court where Kanji Bhai curtly questions the lawyer and pundits about God and the reality behind the fanatical rituals and irrational money spent in the name of prasads, offerings and religious ceremonies. And another eye opener is the chat show, where Kanjibhai puts out his opinion about religion, “Religion either makes you a freak, or a terrorist,” he says. Kanjibhai’s logic of God is simple – worship Him everywhere, show him in your behavior. Rather than spending on rituals feed the poor. Steer-clear hypocrite babas. Let God be your friend who doesn't need a messenger to get close to you. Do away with master-slave relationship. The film shows a mirror to our society where religion has become a money-minting business! Performance wise, the film belongs to Paresh Rawal. This twisted hero has proved his prowess yet again with his effortless dialogue delivery. Akshay Kumar as God is charming and endearing. You love him for his balanced performance. Mithun Chakraborty as the effeminate guru is awesome. He makes you cringe and that’s exactly what his role demanded. Govind Namdeo goes overboard at times, but that suits him. Poonam Jhawar as Gopi Maiiya makes you smirk. The real life inspirations behind the three God-men make them all the more interesting. Musically, Go Govinda (watch the song) is decent, thought Sonakshi is just average. Mere Nisshan is impressive. Sethu Sriram’s camerawork is worth a mention, though the special effects are not up to the mark. The script is taut and moves at a fast pace giving you no time to think, yet makes you think! Some might find it preachy, but that’s how it was intended to be. Not every movie is meant to be forgotten once you are out of the theatre. And Oh My God is one such film, which will stay on with you! Watch OMG Oh My God! for power-packed performances and a concept that will touch your heart and make you think!
