Choosing a college major, well, is a major decision in a teen’s life. This is a crossroad where you on the first step to paint your adult life in the way you envision it. And most of the time, parents already have a laid-out path for their children when it comes to college majors. Some want their children to follow in their footsteps, some want their kids to have the career that they weren’t able to delve into. Problems and conflict arise when you and your parents’ college major choice are completely on opposite sides of the pole. And if you are in that situation, below are tips to help you deal with it without burning any bridges: Talk to them calmly You don’t need to have a shouting match with your parents when it comes to explaining to them why you chose a major that is out of their preference. Explain to them why you chose that major and the fact that you got accepted means that you have the potential to be good at that field. Ask them rationally why they are against that major. They might have a perfectly good explanation – which nowadays comes down to finances. Stick to your choice If you’re really decided on that major, then by all means, stick to it. Don’t let your parents’ objection stop you from pursuing that degree. After all, you are the one who is going to the university and take all the classes – not them. If the money is not enough to sustain you for the next two to four years, and you are firm on your decision, then get a part-time job or apply for a scholarship to finance your education. Respect their opinion Whatever their reasons for objecting to your choice, you have to respect that and not take it against them. And hopefully, they will respect yours too and give you their blessing to pursue that degree. Do not stop loving them just because they prefer another major for you. And hopefully, again, they will not change how they treat you just because you didn’t go their way.
