If you have experienced unwanted noise, you will understand how irritating it can be. Noise can do more than raise your stress levels; certain types of noise can actually be detrimental to your hearing. High-intensity and high-frequency noise is the most dangerous due to the amount and force of the sound waves that are being transmitted. Even the smallest increases or decreases in the decibel level can have a significant impact on the way in which you hear a sound. An increase of 10 decibels makes a sound seem twice as loud. If you are plagued by unwanted noise, you may be considering turning to some of the many soundproofing products available for purchase. These products tend to be categorised as either sound absorption or sound blocking (soundproofing) products. Sound Absorption Products Sound absorption products, as their name suggests, absorb sound waves and stop them from distorting. They thereby prevent you from hearing noises such as echoes and reverberations. A large, empty room will offer very little sound absorption. This is because there is nothing in the room to prevent the sound waves from bouncing off the walls. When you add a thick carpet, heavy curtains and upholstered furniture to the room, you will notice a significant improvement in the way in which sound is heard in the room. This is because the fibrous materials from which the curtains, carpet and furniture are made effectively absorb the sound waves. All sound absorption products designed to absorb echoes within a room are lightweight, soft and fluffy. They therefore soften up your room’s surfaces. Sound Blocking Products Sound blocking products stop sound waves from travelling into unwanted areas. You can use sound blocking products if you are tired of hearing the sound of your neighbour's drumming sessions or are unable to sleep due to the sound of traffic roaring past your house. To stop sounds from travelling through your walls, ceilings, and floors, you will need to add mass. Sound blocking products are therefore designed to be heavy and cumbersome. If you desire to block out sound in your home, you will need to add thickness to your walls and, where possible, suspend your floors and ceilings with heavy materials like Acoustic flooring. If you would like to both absorb and block sound within a room, it is possible to find products that are able to offer both these properties. These products are known as composites.
