Is this the beginning of the end for car stereos in boats? For years when it came to fitting audio systems on production boatsthe default position was some sort of basic stereo that came directfrom the auto sector, or at best a marinised version. And with a pair of speakers in the saloon and another in thecockpit these are still perfectly adequate for smaller boats whereeveryone is happy to listen to the same music and keep changing theCDs, but the world has moved on. New owners are now demanding a much higher specification for theirmoney and the price of more sophisticated audio systems has fallendramatically in recent years, putting yacht builders in the happyposition of being able to offer a significantly upgraded audiopackage with minimal additional outlay. Heading this change is leading audio-visual specialist Marine AV inpartnership with Southerly yachts.
Marine AV has devised for Southerly a wireless audio package thatdivides a boat into three zones all linked back to a small centralserver. Individual music can be played in each zone, selected by remotecontrol from the server, so that while guests in the cockpit may bein enjoying some lively music, guests down below could be listeningto something more relaxed. A flick of a switch can turn the yacht into one enlarged zone,with everyone enjoying the same sounds. Uploading CDs and MP3 files to the server is quick and easy.
"Systems like this are now available for as little as£2,000, and installation is quick and straightforward withminimal cabling," said Marine AV"s David Milner. "A high quality audio system reflects positively on the restof the yacht," added Ben Davies, Sales Manager fromNorthshore Shipyard, builders of Southerly yachts. "It"s a highly visible piece of interior equipmentthat reinforces our message of technology and quality. Offering a high quality audio system really contributes to ourlevel of customer comfort, enjoyment and satisfaction." Marine AV has so far fitted multi-zone systems to a Southerly 47and a 49 from Northshore, and another 47 is booked in for thisspring.
