Different types of hydraulic car lifts in varying designs are used nowadays. You would mainly find two or four post lift since they are the most common units. These units have arms that would extend below the vehicle to lift it to specified jacking points or by the frame. Another common type of lift is the “drive-on” lift. It has metal tracks that would let the car drive onto it before getting lifted. In other types of lifts, a center column is there that would sink into the floor below the lift. Whatever be the design, all types of lift mainly function using hydraulic systems. The concept that a car lift uses to operate is same as in case of any other hydraulic system. The basic idea is to apply force to liquid from one place and then the pressure is passed through a system to give the effect at somewhere else. In car lifts, the hydraulic fluid that is used is basically a kind of petroleum oil with additives. It cannot be compressed with any amount of pressure exerted on it. Here, the fluid passes through the through the hydraulic system, which moves a cylinder that helps to raise the vehicle off the ground. You would find certain four post lift to use electric motor while some others use air compressor. Whatever be the source of power, the basic idea remains the same as already mentioned. In mechanical systems, the idea of trading force for distance is quite common. In case of a vehicle lift, the process is to connect a narrow cylinder to a wider one through hydraulic lines. The narrow cylinder compresses the oil that makes it travel a long distance. However, when the force is moved to the wider cylinder, the oil travels a shorter distance but with greater force.
