Paul made that statement in the latter part of the epistle to the Galatians, who were in danger of rejecting the new covenant, and reverting to the first covenant, the law and commandments, which brought the knowledge of sin. The knowledge of sin brought condemnation, by the law. In Galatians 4:19, Paul makes this statement, My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you. It is evident that man must keep his faith active concerning the blood and ministry of Jesus, our High Priest, through the Spirit, and not return to the flesh of the dead man Adam, which caused God to put in the law to reveal the sin conscience of man. How can a man tell if he is being led by the flesh, and his faith is slipping back into condemnation? He finds himself trying to keep the law and the commandments to please God, and becomes entangled in Adam’s bondage again, instead of walking in the freedom of the newness of life in Christ Jesus, who has put Adam’s sin conscience away forever. In other words, a man keeps his faith in the new covenant and High Priestly ministry of Jesus Christ, and not in the oldness of the letter. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. Paul said in Romans 7:9-11, For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. 10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. According to the Apostle Paul, the law and commandments were weak through the flesh, and could make nothing perfect, but God sent his Son, born of a woman (Adam), born under the law, in the likeness of sinful flesh, yet without sin, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in those who walk not after the flesh (Adam), but are led by the Spirit (Christ). (Galatians 4:4 and Romans 8:3) Keeping the commandments of God can never bring a right standing with God conscience in the heart of man. Paul stated in Colossians 1:21-23 concerning this, And you that were sometime alienated and enemies in you mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: if ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel. Every man that keeps this hope alive in his heart, and not be moved from it, shall be presented before the Father, holy, unblameable, unreproveable and faultless. Any man who keeps this hope alive in his heart will escape the righteous judgment and wrath of God, which is to come on the disobedient, those who do not accept Jesus Christ. No man can make himself holy, he can however, walk in holiness, once trained by the Holy Spirit. The law cannot train the new man in Christ. The law governed sinful flesh. God trains holy spirits, by the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus, to those who allow themselves to be trained. The Spirit of God is training a man out of condemnation in his mind, into Life in Christ Jesus with the word of God, so man can think, see himself, and act like Christ Jesus.
