Each year the third Monday of the February month is celebrated as the Washington’s Birthday and it is a federal holiday in United States. This date is chosen to honor George Washington who was the first President of the United States. This holiday is also known as the President’s Day. In a number of states, this is a state holiday with the same name and the day is chosen to honor two great presidents of USA, George Washington (birth date 22nd February) and Abraham Lincoln (12th February). The Uniform Monday Holiday Act was signed into a law in 1968 and was in effect in 1971. Before the Uniform Monday Holiday Act came into effect, Washington’s Birthday was celebrated as a federal holiday on his actual holiday. Presidents Day 2013 is on February 18th, Monday. Till late 1980s, the corporate business used to be non-functional as it is done on Christmas Day or Memorial Day. Since late 1980s, more and more businesses are kept open and sales are done more than that is done on any normal day. Regular classes are held in colleges and schools on this day. Whatever may be the current trend and disputes about the Monday holiday, this is the day on which people offer their respect and homage for George Washington”, who is known as the “father of his country”. This is the day to commemorate all his deeds, his leadership in creating a great country. People remember him and pay tribute to the general who was the first person to honor the common soldiers by creating the first military badge of merit for them. The practice was revived in 1932, on the 200th birthday of George Washington and the Purple Heart Medal having the image of George Washington was awarded to the soldiers who got injured in the battle. This is the day when the veterans are honored. In Washington’s hometown, Virginia, a month long celebration is held. In Eustis, Florida, the George Fest started in 1902. In Westmoreland County, Virginia and at Mount Vernon, the celebrations continue for the entire week. Another year has come to an end and people are eagerly waiting for the President’s Day 2013. People are waiting for the community parade, celebrations and other ways to show their respect to the first president of USA, George Washington.
