The Syrian government forces foiled anattempted suicide car bombing Friday in the northern city Aleppoonly a day after two suicide blasts killed at least 55 in thecapital. This happened when the UN peace mission in Syria continued to stepup its deployment despite persistent skepticism. The would-be suicide bomber was killed in al-Sha'ar district inAleppo after his Japanese-brand Mazda minibus was intercepted bysecurity forces. Four tanks of explosives, weighing around 1,400 kg, were found inthe minibus, which the bomber had planned to blow up in Aleppo'sdensely populated neighborhood, the state-run SANA news agencyreported.
Also in Aleppo and shortly after the abortive car-bomb attack, anunidentified gunman hurled a handmade grenade at the building ofthe ruling al-Baath party's branch office, killing a securityagent, local media reported. The failed bombing attempt came just one day after Thursday's twincar-bomb attacks against an intelligence complex in southernDamascus killed 55 and wounded 370 others in what was consideredthe deadliest attacks during the country's 14-month unrest. The blasts have drawn strong condemnation from the UN, the EuropeanUnion (EU), the United States, Russia, China, Iran, Yemen, amongothers. So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks. TheSyrian government blamed them on foreign-backed terrorists whilethe opposition held the authorities responsible.
These attacks have further undermined the credibility of theceasefire brokered by UN-Arab League joint special envoy Kofi Annanbetween the Syrian government and the opposition four weeks ago. The ceasefire has done little to stem the violence in Syria amiddaily reports of murders, bombings, kidnappings and acts of arsonand sabotage. The opposition Syrian National Council said Friday in a statementthe peace plan was in fact "dead from the start." It accusedPresident Bashar al-Assad's government of failing to respect theceasefire and urged foreign intervention. It also said a buffer zone and no-fly zone should be created, adding that the serial bombings were Assad's scare tactics againstthe international observers. Annan had said earlier this week that there were numerousviolations of his six-point peace plan and urged the Syriangovernment and the opposition to halt violence, warning Syria woulddescend into "full civil war" if they did not.
"The violence must stop and a credible process of politicaldialogue must begin," he said, warning that a civil war "will notonly affect Syria, it will have an impact on the whole region." Yet it seems that the safety and security of the nearly 150 unarmedinternational observers already on the ground are menaced. On Friday, a convoy of UN observers was pelted with stones byunidentified group of people near a suburban area of Damascus, witnesses told Xinhua. Stones rained upon the convoy as it was heading to the suburb ofDumair, northeast of Damascus, before reaching a militarycheckpoint at the entrance of Dumair, witnesses said, adding thatone of the UN vehicles was slightly damaged with a smashed windowand none of the observers were injured. Last Wednesday, a roadside bomb ripped through a UN convoy en routeto southern Daraa province, injuring eight members of theaccompanying security forces.
However, despite skepticism and dangers facing the UN observers, many countries believe the six-point deal is still the only viablesolution to the current Syrian crisis. The White House said Thursday it supported Annan's peace plandespite continued skepticism about the Syrian president'swillingness to carry it out. White House Spokesman Jay Carney also called on Assad's governmentto abide by his commitments to complying with Annan's plan towithdraw his forces and cease fire. He also admitted at a press gaggle on board Air Force One thatWashington's support for Annan's plan came from their observance oflowered level of violence in Syria, saying the deal would help laythe foundation for a political transition to take place eventually.
EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said in a statement onFriday that even though the unending waves of violence brought moredifficulties for Annan's peace-making mission in Syria, she stillbelieved his plan is the only way forward. Moscow also believed the UN observers should continue with theirmission, the Russian foreign ministry said on Friday. Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Alexander Lukashevich also saidFriday the UN Security Council needs to prevent arms from beingsmuggled into Syria. "The international community must build a reliable barrier forthose who are going further to pour oil on flames of theintra-Syrian crisis," he said. He also said arming the illegal radical groups directlycontradicted UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan forSyria.
"This is especially dangerous against the backdrop of intensifiedactivities of elements linked to international terrorist andextremist networks on the Syrian territory," Lukashevich said. On Friday, the Lebanese army reportedly intercepted a SierraLeone-flagged ship Lutfallah II, which was suspected of carryingweapons and ammunition to Syria, off Lebanon's northern coast. Meanwhile, the UN mission in Syria on Friday continued to step upits deployment on the ground, a UN spokesman told reporters at adaily briefing. "On Friday, the mission had 145 observers and 56 civilian staffdeployed in Syria," UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said. "The missionis also carrying out patrols, one day after the attacks that tookplace in Damascus." With a total mandated strength of 300 unarmed military observersand additional civilian staff as required, the UN mission continuesto receive new members on a daily basis as it expands its presenceacross the Middle East country.
Despite the ongoing but decreased violence in parts of Syria, theUnited Nations is working very hard to bring all the 300 unarmedobservers into the Middle East country by the end of May, HerveLadsous, the UN under-secretary-general for peacekeepingoperations, told Xinhua in a recent interview. "We are working very actively on this, and we will actually achievefull deployment before the end of the month," Ladsous said.
