JERUSALEM, May 12 -- Israelis took to the streets across theircountry on Saturday evening, in protest against the government'sfailure to reduce social gaps. The largest rally took place in Israel's biggest city of Tel Aviv, where some 5,000 people gathered at central Rabin Square. Protest marches in Tel Aviv began in the Shapira, Levinsky, andHatikva neighborhoods, before uniting and continuing on to RabinSquare.
Demonstrators chanted "we want justice, not charity" and "taking from the poor, giving to the rich, what a country ofcorruption." Demonstrators also protested against the recent formation of aunity government by the ruling coalition and the centrist Kadimaparty. "What we saw this week (the unity government deal) weremoves that resulted from personal interests of power and control,"a protestor was quoted by local media as saying. Similar rallies were also held in Jerusalem, Haifa, Eilat, andother major Israeli cities. In Jerusalem, some 1,000 protestors converged in an intersectionnot far from the prime minister's residence, causing a disruptionof traffic.
They then marched toward Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu'sofficial residence and rallied in front of the gate of thecompound. On a platform erected outside the compound, a number ofprotesters delivered speeches criticizing the current government. A protester told Xinhua that they were demonstrating against anextensive range of social woes, including the gap between the richand poor, the education gap and the high living cost. Last summer, a social justice protest movement swept Israel, withtent encampments sprouting up in cities throughout the country andweekly demonstrations that grew to include hundreds of thousands ofpeople. The movement led Prime Minister Netanyahu to form a committee forsocial change, which issued several recommendations to thegovernment on taxation, housing and education meant to address theprotesters concerns.
