Kushinagar is a prominent religious place of Buddhist. It is also known as Kusinara. It is a nagar panchayat in Kushinagar district in Uttar Pradesh. This place is revered as the most sacred place as Gautama Buddha is believed to have attained Parinirvana here after his death. Kushinagar is 55 km far from Gorakhpur. Bihar state comes to the east of this city. The city boasts of a well noted ancient history. once it was known as Kushavati (Jatakas). The city is prominently mentioned in the epic of Ramayan as the city of Kusha, the son of Ram, a famous personality of Hindu mythology. It was a part of the Malla kingdom of ancient India. This place is located near to Hiranyavati River and regarded as one of the four pious places of Buddhists. The place consists of many ruined stupas and viharas which stand as a specimens of 3rd century BCE- - 5th century CE. Based on the historical evidences, the most of constructions were built during the time of Mauryan emperor Ashoka. The place is well noticeable and holds its historical value for these old constructions which were highly patronized by Ashoka, the great emperor. The remains of the Parinirvana Stupa and Parinirvana Temple were rediscovered in the 19th century. Other important remnants of the main site such as the Matha Kuar and Ramabhar stupa were revealed in this time. Gorakhpur is the nearest airport and another option is Patna Airport which is also located at a convenient distance. Gorakhpur rail station is the nearest station and it is located 55 km far from Kushinagar. The place is well connected by bus with other destinations like Gorakhpur, Lumbini, Kapilavastu, and Agra. The place experiences a sub tropical climate like the other places of Uttar Pradesh. So October to February is the best time to visit this place. Now Kushinagar is a much-frequented pilgrimage place which attracts the Indian and foreign tourists. Many temples have been constructed by Indian, Chinese, Sri Lankan, Thai, Burmese, South Korean, Tibetan and Japanese Buddhists. Mahaparinirvana Stupa is the most important and well visited place in Kushinagar. It is built on the place of Buddha's Mahaparinirvana or great nirvana. The place of his cremation is another important place. A1500 year old Buddha-image which is the famous statue of reclining Buddha is a well noticeable idol and quite highlighted for its religious value. The main attraction, the Mahaparinirvana Stupa is encompassed by the ruins of some ancient monasteries. State government museum needs a special mention as it exhibits several Buddhist artefacts. Other important shrines are Linh Son Chinese temple, Myanmar Burmese temple, Birla Hindu Buddha temple, Japanese stupa, Korean temple, Shiva temple and Ram Janaki temple. The place is also associated with Lord Mahavir, the founder of Jainism. It is believed that Lord Mahavir attained Parinirvana at pawa, presently known as Fazilnagar which is very near to Kushinagar. The place witnessed many tourists every year. At Kushinagar, Great Lord Buddha, founder of Buddhism, delivered his last sermon.
