There’s no doubt about it: Business owners and managers need to make sure that their employees are being as productive as possible during business hours. After all, if workers aren’t productive, business suffers. And, ultimately, that’s bad for everyone – business owners, managers and employees. Over the past several years, employee productivity has decreased due to abuse of the Internet. This isn’t too surprising considering the fact that most workers have unlimited access to the World Wide Web, which offers up a tremendous number of temptations to the average employee, including social media outlets, shopping opportunities, entertainment news sites and so much more. Because reduced productivity has become such a concern for many businesses, employers have turned more and more to PC Monitoring Software in an effort to resolve the problem. At first glance, that may seem like a good idea. But, unfortunately, the use of employee Internet monitoring software is completely ineffective and only serves to make the problem worse. Just consider some of the downfalls to monitoring employee activity using this type of software: It’s an invasion of privacy. In fact, Employee Internet Monitoring Software is often referred to as “spyware.” It may be possible to use this software and remain undetected for a certain amount of time, but eventually employees will catch on. Once they do, they’ll feel as though their privacy is being invaded and, in fact, it is. This will lead to a lack of trust for their employer. This, in turn, will lead to an even lower productivity rate on the part of workers. It’s ineffective. Some business owners and managers might even be willing to risk losing the trust of their employees if they knew for certain that monitoring software was effective. But the truth is that you can’t possibly monitor workers’ use of the Internet because their work computers aren’t their only means of accessing the Web. Think, for a moment, about the recent surge in popularity of both smart phones and notepad computers. Studies show that as many as 90% of young workers now carry smart phones with them each and every day, and notepad technology is rapidly becoming just as popular. What this means, of course, is that employees have constant and continuous access to the Internet through their own devices. So even if a manager decides to use monitoring software, it can’t possibly track all of the workers’ Internet usage. The only real solution to reduced productivity lies in addressing the problem from a positive rather than a negative point of view. Very simply: business owners need to find a way to motivate their employees to be more productive!
