Since the inception of the Internet in 1995, its use has skyrocketed. In fact, the vast majority of the people in the world today have access to the Internet. And while it has certainly brought a myriad of advantages, it has also presented some problems. Not the least of these is its negative impact on employee productivity. Because virtually every business now relies on the Internet – whether it’s used for advertising, communicating, purchasing office supplies, conducting research on competitors or countless other reasons – the majority of employees now have access to the Internet at work. So it’s no surprise that these employees inevitably use the Internet for personal reasons during work hours. This, of course, can have a tremendously negative impact on their levels of productivity. If you’re like many business owners and managers, you have considered or even already implemented some type of Employee Computer Monitoring in an effort to combat the problem. Now the question is, how will you make it work? Why Employee Computer Monitoring Doesn’t Work If your employees only had access to the Internet through their work computers, some type of monitoring software would definitely do the job. However, over the past few years the Internet isn’t the only technology that has skyrocketed in popularity. Smart phones and notepad computers are now all the rage. In fact, some studies estimate that 90 percent of young workers carry smart phones! The reality is that your employees will have access to the Internet regardless of what type of Employee Internet Monitoring software you implement. There’s another reason that this type of software doesn’t work. Remember what the real issue is – a lack of employee productivity in the workplace. In order to resolve the issue, you not only have to identify who is wasting time, but also how to motivate them to become more productive. Even if you could accurately monitor your employees’ Internet usage – which, as we’ve already established, you can’t really achieve due to smart phone and notepad technology – what will you gain by having that information? Simply knowing how often they’re abusing Internet access won’t make them want to work any harder. In fact, if you have employees that want to waste time at work, they’ll do it one way or another. If it’s not the Internet, they’ll make personal phone calls or play a computer game. These individuals will find whatever diversion they can to avoid work. So the only real solution to a lack of employee productivity is to find a way to motivate them to perform better. Not only is Internet monitoring “Mission Impossible,” but using it to increase employee productivity is as well.
