If you’re a business owner or manager supervising employees with Internet access, chances are you have faced a problem that has become all too common in our current business environment – a decreased amount of employee productivity due to abuse of the Internet. Considering all the temptations that Web access presents to workers, it’s really no surprise that so many of them end up using the Internet during the workday for personal reasons. Whether it’s communicating with family and friends through social media, doing a little online shopping, checking local news and weather, or even deciding where to go to dinner, your employees have those temptations at their fingertips all day long every day. Many business owners and managers have attempted to Monitor Employee Internet Usage or even looked into how to block websites in an effort to combat the problem. And while it’s no doubt that monitoring software or blocking websites may “scare” employees into working more diligently for a brief period of time, ultimately this is not the answer. Even if a manager understands how to block websites or monitor employee Internet usage, it still won’t motivate employees to do a better job. That motivation must come from management, and it must be presented in a positive manner in order to be effective. Fortunately, there are some simple steps that managers can take to motivate their employees to be more productive during business hours: Measure each employee’s productivity levels. Determine how much time each person spends actively engaged in business-related activities during the workday. Establish a work standard that each employee must meet, and be sure every worker understands what that standard is. Set up improvement goals for each individual. As each employee achieves the first goal, set up a second and a third, until he or she finally reaches an acceptable level of productivity. Offer employees non-monetary benefits when they achieve certain goals. If an employee really rises to the occasion, you may want to increase his or her salary or even promote that individual. But there are plenty of other ways to motivate workers. Give an employee the opportunity to learn another aspect of the business or transition into another position if he or she expresses the desire to do so. Offer flexible work hours. If it’s feasible, offer workers with young families the opportunity to telecommute from home once a week if they achieve a certain level of productivity. Finding ways to motivate your employees requires getting to know each and every individual, understanding what’s important to that person, and finding a way to make his or her day-to-day work more interesting and rewarding.
