Before starting with this topic, let’s see what a fiber optic adapter is first. A fiber optic adapter is a coupler that used to link the fiber patch cables or fiber optic connectors. Fiber optic adapters are widely used in the optic distribution frame (ODF), optical fiber communications equipment, the measuring appliance and so on. The fiber optic adapters are for fiber optic connections providing a cable to cable fiber connection. Types of the adapters should fit according to the connectors in fiber optic adaptors sides and shape. Generally, according to the types of the connectors the fiber optic adapter used for, there are standard fiber optic adapters for same types of connectors and Hybrid Fiber Optic Adapters for the different kinds of fiber connector or cables.?Next, I will give a separate introduction about each type of fiber optic adapters. Standard fiber optic adapter Standard or flange fiber optic adapter also called mating sleeves, which are used to connect optical connectors of same type, such as SC, ST, LC and MTRJ. They are simplex, duplex and quad types, female to female type for linking fiber optic connectors, they are typically with ceramic sleeves, fitting for both single mode and multimode fiber optic connections. Hybrid fiber optic adapter Hybrid fiber optic adapters are used to link two different kinds of fiber connectors or cable assemblies. Like LC to SC hybrid adapter can link LC connector at one side and SC connector at the other side. Hybrid fiber adapters can be also used for single mode and multimode fiber optic connections with PC or APC sleeves, in simplex and duplex style. Hybrid fiber adapters use high precision ceramic sleeves because it can provide reliable ferrule mating and ensure low insertion loss and return loss during the connecting. This type of optical fiber adapters is with compact sized and widely used for network environments integrating different configurations and telecommunications networks. Bare Fiber Adapter Obviously, bare fiber adapter is structured with optic fibers on one side and the adapter on the other side. It is used to link the bare optical fiber to fiber optic equipment. The adapter side is a connector that can plug into the equipment and enable a quick and easy termination for the optic fiber. Because this feature of the bare fiber adapters, they are widely used for emergency situation for urgent connection. There are SC, FC, LC, ST bare fiber adapters available in the market. In fact, fiber optic adapter or fiber optic adapter panel is the other important item except the fiber optic connectors used to link two fiber optic lines together. By using the fiber optic adapters, any fiber optic connections can be made by plugging the fiber lines into the adapter panels. It is also important to known the right type of optical fiber adapter for the correct fiber optic connections.
