The Internet has become an integral part of business in the U.S. and around the world. Companies now do commerce just as much in cyberspace as they do on the phone and face-to-face. In fact, the Internet has become a mainstay in business for everything from advertising to tracking inventory to ordering supplies. With all the advantages the Internet has brought to small and large companies worldwide, it has also brought disadvantages, not the least of which is reduced employee productivity that stems from abuse of the Internet. When you consider all the temptations available to workers, the productivity problem really isn’t surprising. Whether it’s online shopping, social media, 24-hour online news and weather sites or satellite radio, the fact is that there are a huge number of diversions awaiting your employees, and they’re all just a click away. In order to address the productivity problem, many businesses have turned to computer monitoring software. Often called “spyware” because of its invasive nature, Internet Tracking Software is designed to provide business owners and managers with information on which employees are visiting undesirable websites. On the surface, this may seem like it would help employers that are trying to discourage workers from wasting time conducting personal business online during work hours. But does it really? Once armed with information about their employees’ Internet use, what should the business owner or manager do next? While you could certainly discipline workers that have abused their Internet privileges, would that increase their productivity? Granted, it may actually improve an employee’s performance for a very short period of time because he would fear losing his job. But in the long run, spying on employees with Computer Monitoring Software will result in workers resenting their employers. This resentment, in turn, will lead to an even more reduced rate of productivity. So the problem that tracking software is designed to resolve is actually only made worse by the use of “spy ware.” One alternative to tracking employees’ Internet usage is, instead, to measure the amount of time each worker spends in productive work each day. This is actually the opposite approach to the problem – rather than focusing on how much time workers are wasting, you are instead focusing on how much time they’re NOT wasting. The next step in resolving the issue is to establish a performance standard that you expect all employees to meet. Explain what that standard is to each worker. Then find effective ways to motivate each employee to be more productive. In short, if you’re concerned about your employees’ productivity, take a positive approach to resolve the problem!
