Stair railings add beauty and safety to homes. They are easy to match to the home’s interior features in many different styles and colors. Since stair railing are a part of the stair assembly, stair safety is a primary concern. Stair rail installation is governed by local building codes to ensure safety regulations are closely adhered to. As always, when dealing with any aspect of home construction, check with the local building inspector’s office regarding home stair regulations. Instructions as follows: Firstly, measure the locally required stair rail height with a 4-foot level. Set the level on end, against the stone wall, and against the nose (edge) of the second step (tread) of the stairs. Place a mark on the level at the top of the second step (tread). Secondly, measure the height from the first mark on the level (usually 32 to 34 inches), and mark it on the level also. (You now have two marks on the level, the top of the second step mark, and the other mark at 32 or 34 inches for the railing height.) Thirdly, subtract the thickness of the railing itself and the height of the wall bracket to which the railing will be attached. Measure the railing diagonally (45 degrees), since it will be mounted parallel to the marble stairs. Measure the height of the mounting bracket from the bottom mounting hole of the bracket to the neck of the bracket. Add these two, (usually around 6 inches). Subtract the 6 inches from the 32 or 34 inches to get the height to be marked on the wall. Fourthly, hold the level plum against the wall, and mark the wall at the height from Step 3 (26 or 28 inches minus 32 or 36 minus 6 equals 26 or 28). Mark the top, or other end, of the railing in the same manner (no need to measure again). Mark the wall at the top of the stair to line up with the mark at the bottom of the stairs. Fifthly, mark the wall with a chalk line, using the two marks on the wall from Step 4. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs into which you will mount the brackets. Mount the bottom bracket with the bottom hole on the chalked line. Sixthly, drill a pilot hole for the first screw using a small drill bit in the middle of the located stud. Insert the screw in the bottom hole first, then the top. Mount the top bracket in the same manner. Seventhly, mark the length of the railing to match the stair trim that is nailed to the wall. (This is the stair skirt board and the trim/railing sitting on the treads.) Measure beginning at the 45-degree joint at the top step/tread. Mark the other end at the bottom step in the same way (where the stair trim ends). Eighthly, cut the ends of the marked railing at 45-degree angles. Swap the cut-off ends to create mitered returns for each end. Glue and nail the mitered return to each end of the rail. Mount the railing to the brackets with the collars and screws.
