Since the inception of the Internet in 1995, it has become more and more a mainstay of business in the U.S. and other countries around the world. Although the Web has certainly brought many benefits to businesses, it has brought challenges with it as well. Chief among these is the temptation it presents to employees. With so many distractions just a mouse click away – such as social media, shopping opportunities, entertainment websites and many others – unlimited access to the Internet during working hours has had a negative impact on employee productivity in many companies. In an effort to combat this problem, business owners and managers often turn to Employee Monitoring Software, or “spyware” to keep track of which websites employees are visiting the work day. While this type of software may be effective in some circumstances, it does nothing to improve employee productivity. Other employers have blocked websites in an effort to keep employees from wasting time during the workday. While this certainly keeps employees from visiting some sites, it still doesn’t resolve the problem of decreased productivity. Rather than resorting to Blocked Websites or employee monitoring software, it’s better to approach the issue from a positive point of view rather than a negative one. In other words, business owners and managers need to find a way to improve productivity rather than simply monitoring Internet activity or blocking websites. Fortunately, there are a few simple steps that employers can take to improve the productivity of their workers: Establish performance standards. Set minimum expectations for work performance that all employees must meet in order to maintain good standing in the workplace. Be sure that each employee understands what these performance standards are and the consequences for failing to meet them. Measure the amount of time that employees are actively working on business-related projects during each workday. Ideally, utilize software that measures the amount of time each employee is spending actively working on his or her computer during the day. Then challenge the employee (in a positive manner) to increase that level of productivity by setting up an achievable goal. Once the initial goal is achieved, set up the next goal for improvement. Continue until the employee reaches the desired level of maximum productivity. Find ways to motivate each employee to do his or her best. While this may be a monetary incentive, it doesn’t necessarily have to be. Consider perks for an employee once he or she achieves a certain level of productivity, such as an “employee of the month” award, a designated special parking space, allowing the employee to work a more flexible schedule or even telecommute one day a week from home.
