It is mentioned in many Hindu epics, however it goes like this when demigods approached lord Vishnu to regain their strength after losing it by the curse of Durvasa Muni.They were instructed by Lord to go for Samudra manthan (Churning of ocean of Milk) in Ksheera Sagar (primordial ocean of milk) for Amrita (the nectar of immortality). But the Lord Vishnu had told them to share everything equally with their arch enemies, the demons or Asuras whatever appears during churning. However, during churning when Kumbh of nectar appeared, the flight between demigods and demons had begun in the sky for twelve days and twelve nights. During the battle, Lord Vishnu incarnates as Mohini-Murthi appeared and took away the Kumbh of nectar. While running away with the Kumbh of nectar pouring drops of amrita at four places Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. That is how Kumbh mela is celebrated in four places. Major activities in Kumbh Fair: Kumbh mela is the most sacred of all the pilgrimage of Hindus.
