A project to eliminate the use of hazardous chemicals has beenoper- ational at the Mamatwan mine, in the Northern Cape, for thepast five months and it is hoped that, by the end of 2012,diversified miner BHP Billiton will no longer be performing wetchemical analysis during grade analysis at its Hotazel operations. BHP Billiton is focusing on the use of environment-friendlypractices at its Hotazel manganese mines (HMM), Wessels andMamatwan, by using a fusion-bead method to conduct sample analysiswhich enhances safe-practice chemical testing techniques, says BHPBilliton manganese South Africa asset president Ravi Moodley . The most effective way of keeping hazards at bay is by eliminatingthe use of chemicals, or finding alternative methods that do notcompromise the results of the work. "To ensure that exposure levels are elimin-ated and to driveour focus on zero harm further, the HMM laboratory introduced thefusion-bead method. This alternate tech-nique requires thepreparation of fusion beads by means of a fluxer – anautomated machine designed to prepare glass discs," saysMoodley. The fusion machine lets you prepare glass discs for X-rayfluorescence (XRF) analysis without the analyst being exposed tothe chemicals or manipulation of hot vessels. The new system doesnot require any super-vision and can be stopped at any point incase of an emergency, Moodley explains. The XRF fusion analysis, which is the stan-dard type of gradeanalysis in the mining industry, eliminates exposure to hazardouschemicals, inhalation of acid fumes and pos-sible chemicalpoisoning. From an environmental aspect, this method eliminates thegeneration, handling and disposal of hazardous waste. The HMM laboratories comply with the mines" standard for theremoval and storage of hazardous waste. However, there is no longera need for these services, as the new practices completelyeliminate the use of wet chemicals, says Moodley. Social Development In line with its social development initiatives, BHPBilliton"s manganese division developed a Community PortableSkills Training pro- gramme in 2008. To date, it has awarded morethan 60 community members in the nearby areas of its manganesemining activities in the Northern Cape with portable skillscertificates. "Some of the people are our (internal) employees while somepeople have been able to secure employment in Kuruman with smallbusinesses as a result of this programme," says Moodley. This programme was initiated to tackle one of the critical elementsof the Department of Mineral Resources" Social and LabourPlan requirements, he explains. The Social and Labour Plan is a key com-ponent of the new-ordermining rights regime in South Africa. An outsourced service provider was con- tracted to train employeesand people from the local communities in mining-related entry-leveljobs skills as well as entre-preneurial skills. This enabled BHP Billiton to upskill people and provide them withthe opportunity to apply for jobs in the company, as well as atother companies in the surrounding areas. This increased theirchances of becoming part of the economically active population ofthe Northern Cape, the company states. "The interest in participating in the pro-gramme exceeded ourexpectations," says Moodley. He adds that applications for the advertised intake space in theprogramme in the current intake cycle increased tenfold, comparedwith the previous one. As the programme is ongoing, BHP Billitonexpects continuous improvement. The first intake group participated in engineering-related tradesskills programmes involving basic electrical knowledge, plating orwelding and fitting, and community house-building programmes, aswell as life-skills programmes. "Putting health and safety first, being environmentallyresponsible and supporting our communities are what defines BHPBilliton and we are continuously improving on and implementingprojects to build on our values," Moodley adds. Mamatwan Pedestrian-Mobile Equipment Separation The Mamatwan Pedestrian-Mobile Equip-ment Separation project formspart of BHP"s sustainable initiatives to ensure that safetyin its mining activities is a priority at all times, says Moodley. BHP Billiton"s manganese division started the project twoyears ago in response to the material risk involving tracklessmobile machinery underground at the Mamatwan and Wessels mines, thecompany notes. "Throughout the mine, both on surface and underground, thereare demarcations ensuring that people and machines do not use thesame pathways, thereby eliminating the risk of injuries topeople." Surface pedestrian walkways are separ-ated by means of reinforcedsteel travelling ways in areas where the risk of interactionbetween people and mobile equipment is evident. Separate walkwaysin the plant also protect pedestrians from moving machinery,Moodley notes. "Pedestrians have designated walkways from private-vehicleparking bays to the mine entrance. This entrenches a culture ofpedestrian-mobile equipment separation the moment one enters themine." Further, a proximity detection system was implemented on alltrackless mobile machinery and underground Mining Cap Lamp, which warnspedestrians of approaching mobile equipment by means of an audiblebuzzer, the company adds. The system also warns mobile-equipment operators of approachingpedestrians and other mobile equipment when the field is breached. In addition to sounding an alarm, a Mining Cap Lamp also starts flashing, which visually alerts operators to a pedestrian"s location. "The lamp room is equipped with testing points to verify theoperational status of each Mining Cap Lamp and is noted as ‘nogo" on the prestart check lists for the mobilemachinery," says Moodley. He adds that a light-duty vehicle-based taxi service has beenintroduced underground to limit the risk of mobile-equipmentinteraction with pedestrians in the main travelling ways. Fourlight-duty vehicles were reallocated for the transportation ofpersonnel from their shaft bank to the various working places. Moodley notes that all new underground production areas of Mamatwanare being designed to incorporate separate walkways for pedestriansin the main travelling ways.
