Every day we get into our cars and head out for the day, we cannot help but notice the much larger neighbors we share the road with. Trucks come in many different sizes, styles and colors, and serve many different purposes. Whether you are planning to purchase a truck of your own, or are simply just a vehicle enthusiast, it always pays to learn more about the world around us, cars included. TOW TRUCKS – Tow trucks are designed to pull other smaller vehicles, most often due to mechanical failure or accidents. When your car malfunctions or you are in an emergency situation, you will be calling a Hudson County Towing company, so that a tow truck can pick up your car and bring it to a repair shop. There are three main types of tow trucks, known as Flat Bed, Hook and Chain and Wheel-Lift. Each is named based on its design and use. A Flat Bed tow truck is sometimes called a “rollback” truck. It has a flat top (hence the name), and an empty truck bed. With a hydraulics system in place, the truck is able to move up and down and be used as a ramp for easier loading. A Hook and Chain tow truck serves a purpose very similar to its name. It is used for towing cargo by wrapping chains around the vehicle that requires towing. They have become outmoded as of late, due to their tendency to scratch the item being towed. A Wheel-Life Tow Truck causes much less damage as compared to a Hook and Chain truck. This type of truck uses a metal yoke instead of a chain and the yoke is hooked under the front or back of the car, before it is lifted up and towed. FIRE TRUCK – Along with Hudson County Towing trucks, there are also many other kinds. A fire truck, for example, is one of the most recognized, well-known trucks on the road. We learn about firemen and fire trucks as children, and can always tell when it is near due to its noisy sirens. A fire truck comes equipped with a large water tank, along with all the other resources and gadgetry required for fighting fires. The fire pump, a crucial part of the fire truck, was invented in 2 BC, by Ctesibius of Alexandria, and later reinvented by the Europeans in the 16th century. One of the major strides in fire-fighting came in the 19th century, when horse-drawn fire engines were introduced, allowing for a much faster response-time to fire emergency calls. Dump Truck – Now that we have covered the Hudson County Towing truck and the fire truck, let’s move on to the dump truck. A dump truck is used by construction workers the world over. Anytime you see a street closed off, with dirt and rubble everywhere and men in hard hats screaming things to each other and climbing up various parts of a building, you are most likely going to spot a dump truck as well. A dump truck comes with a hydraulic-operated box attached to its rear, and can be picked up to drop sand, gravel and dirt on the ground behind it, at the construction site. Like the tow truck, there is a flat bed element to this vehicle. When it was first invented by Robert T. Mawhinney, he attached a box to a flat bed truck and used a cable and pulley system to maneuver it. Since then, the dump truck has adapted a more sophisticated system of operation, but the idea is the same. The truck moves to a desired location, and the box attached to it rises and falls accordingly.
