The folks over at tradecarview, Japan’s largest online used car marketplace, have come up with a list of the best sport utility vehicles most suitable for winter driving. While the challenges of winter weather such as heavy snow, sleet, and hard rain serve to make people run for cover, these cars put up a brave fight. What makes these rides hot even in the freezing cold? Toyota Land Cruiser Aside from the standard features of an SUV, the Land Cruiser comes with winter extras: front fog lamps, headlamp washers, dynamic suspension system, and crawl control, which takes over the brakes and accelerator when the SUV encounters low-traction conditions. The Land Cruiser also has Multi-Terrain Select, a great and handy feature for drivers residing in snowstorm-prone areas. This technology allows drivers to inform the car of their current driving conditions along with a preferred speed setting. When the system is activated the Land Cruiser will make sure that it travels at the selected speed, applying the brakes and adjusting the stability and traction control as needed. Nissan Juke It’s no joke that the Juke is on tradecarview’s list—its all-wheel-drive and traction controls are flawless on icy road conditions, which is perfect for winter and the nearing spring, when everything thaws and turns everything to slush. The control system moves torque to the front and rear wheels as needed, and this traction in wintery slick conditions is a big thumbs-up for a small car. Ground clearance for the Juke is only 7 inches but that’s more than enough to ride through snow and slush. Jeep Grand Cherokee The Grand Cherokee is a true road warrior and has the reputation of never getting stuck in snow and ice. It stands tall and can even go taller: the technology bundled with this SUV allows drivers to raise the Cherokee’s height with the press of a button. The low-profile aerodynamic mode is the most gas-saving height; the mid-level is perfect for some light off-roading; and the vertigo-inducing third level makes it look like the Cherokee is raising its brows at the rocky terrain. Switch to snow mode settings and the Cherokee’s electronic brake system does its best to prevent slipping for a steady ride through the snow. Land Rover Range Rover Sport This SUV may look more like the city mouse than the country one in the Land Rover family but it handles winter conditions really well. As a Land Rover it has the Terrain Response System, automatically adjusting power and braking in five different modes: highway, sand, mud and ruts, rock crawl, and of course, snow (it’s grouped together with grass and gravel). The Range Rover Sport can also go for a dip in the bubbling brooks of spring with its 39.4 inches of maximum wading depth. Ground clearance is 8.9 inches. That’s one big machine to contend with. tradecarview also identified other SUVs that are most suitable for winter driving: the Mitsubishi Pajero, Suzuki Jimny, Toyota Hilux Surf, Subaru Impreza, Audi Quattro 5, and the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. All of these SUVs also perform astoundingly well in other weather conditions. So if you’re thinking to gear up this winter season, take tradecarview’s advice and go for a vehicle that can adapt to any terrain, in any weather. Happy winter driving!
