Parenthesis should always be in pairs. Some publications, however, use single parentheses with numbers or letters marking items in a series parentheses. For example: ' The clerk asked for my a) home address, b) telephone number and c) date of birth. Apart from this instance, a single parentheses looks lonley. Many writers use the colon and the semi colon wrongly. These two punctuation marks are closely related but do not work nor should be used in the same way.The work of a colon is to deliver items that have been listed in a preceding sentence, a list or a long quotation, or a statement that explains or expands on immediately preceding information. E.g. 'I have three goals in life: to be healthy, to do useful work, and to be wealthy.' The most important function of a semi colon is to join closely related independent clauses. It indicates a pause that is stronger than the pause indicated by the comma but weaker than the pause indicated by a period. It is much closer to a period than a coma. For example: 'The university introduced three more faculties last year; six more departments the previous year; and produced hundred more doctors the year before'. Independent clauses can be joined by a comma when a conjunction is used, but when independent clauses are joined by 'however', a semi colon must be used instead of a comma. For example; 'The university introduced six more faculties last year, however, unless the university hires more professors, none will be introduced this year. Semi colons are useful in separating phrases in a list when the individual phrases already contain commas. Example; 'Present at the function were Mr. Smith, the chief superintendent; Mr. Scott, the Director; and Mr. Brook, the Managing director responsible for operations. Never use exclamation marks if possible. It denotes laziness to think of a more useful alternative. If you feel compelled to use it, do so sparingly and effectively. By reading more the work of seasoned and professional writers, you will learn how they use it in the most effective way. essay faq
