In today’s world everyone strive for speed especially in the case of the computer. Nobody wants to wait for doing any task. Most of the people don’t know “How to test RAM of the computer?” RAM of the computer play significant role in speed on every computer. Defected RAM can cause computer to cause unpredictable error. It can cause the computer to freeze suddenly, create problem while booting process and it could be one of the reasons responsible for BSOD (Blue Screen of Death).In this article I will let you know about the characteristics of RAM and the methods which you can use to check your computer’s RAM. In computers we have three types of memories such as RAM, ROM and Cache memory.RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It is also known as a Read/Write memory of the computer. ROM stands for Read Only Memory. It does not allow user to write/store any data. Cache memory is the smallest but the fastest memory available in the computer. This memory is placed closest to the CPU. It is categorized as L1, L2 and L3 cache depending on its position in computer architecture. RAM plays the most important role for maintaining the speed of the computer. Characteristics of RAM: • RAM is volatile in nature. It means that data is stored in RAM as long as power is switched on. When the power goes off the data stored in Ram is vanished. • RAM provides Random Access capability for the user. It means the time required for accessing the data is independent of the position stored in RAM. • RAM allows user to read and write capability where as ROM don’t allow user to write anything in the ROM memory. Most of the users don’t know how to check the speed of RAM. In this article I will let you know about the important steps which you should follow for determining the speed of the Ram. • First of all check the Total amount of RAM you have: 1. Make a Right click on “My computer”, select “Properties” and then you will have System Properties on your screen. 2. Click on the General tab then your computer will show your System configuration along with total amount of RAM installed in your computer. 3. Now a days commonly people use 1GB RAM. But on the safer side use 2GB RAM. For determining the speed of RAM you can use the free tools available on the Microsoft website. I have used the Windows Memory Diagnostics tool or MEMTEST86+ and in my opinion it will give convincing results. This tool performs few comprehensive tests on your computer, analyzes RAM performance and generates results. You should follow the steps mentioned below for testing the speed of your Computer’s RAM: • For using MEMTEST86+ you have to crate bootable media .You can create startup disk on USB, Optical disk or floppy drive. Then executable the file (mtinst.exe) following the download, and chooses “Create Startup Disk” to create optical disc of the diagnostic tool. • Shut down your computer and reboot MEMTEST86+ from the optical disk. If you have problem booting the media then make sure the boot order in your system’s BIOS is set to boot the optical drive or USB flash Drive ahead of your hard drive. • Then MEMTEST86+ will start to test your Computer’s RAM. This test includes eight phases if your RAM completes all of them with no fatal problem then you need not to worry else if RAM fails in the test then you have no other option and you have to get a new RAM. You will get result that will show the current status of you RAM condition on your computer interface. Exit the diagnostic tool once the test has completed.
