Chances are if you own a business or work in a management position, you have employees who use the Internet on a daily basis. In fact, many jobs require that employees have Internet access all day long every day. Since its inception in 1995, the World Wide Web has provided countless benefits to businesses around the world. Just think of how streamlined commerce has become in our age of boundless technology! Thanks to the Internet, we can track shipments of products from one location to another, communicate effectively with other departments inside our own company or at remote locations around the world, shop for office supplies or components to build products, keep track of the marketing efforts of our competitors and so much more. Unfortunately, the Internet has also brought some challenges to employers.Perhaps the biggest of those is the negative impact it has had on the productivity of employees. Considering the temptations presented by the Internet, it's no wonder that so many employees end up using it for personal tasks during the workday. Whether it's communicating with friends or family, catching up on national news, reading the local weather report or doing a little online banking, workers are ending up spending more time using the Internet for personal reasons and less time using it for business-related tasks during business hours. In an effort to resolve this problem, many employers have turned to computer monitoring software, or "spyware." This type of software allows a business owner or manager to track which websites employees are visiting during the workday and how often they visit them. While this may sound like valuable information for an employer to have, it really does nothing to help resolve the problem of a lack of employee productivity. In fact, PC Monitoring Software can have just the opposite effect - it can create resentment on the part of employees once they discover their boss is "spying" on them, and that in turn can lead to an even greater lack of motivation and productivity. Rather than using Computer Monitoring Software, the real answer is for management to understand why employees are so easily distracted. After all, it can't be just the allure of the Internet. In fact, for employees that enjoy their jobs and are challenged in a positive way to perform their work to the best of their ability, the Internet probably presents little if any temptation at all. It's only when you, as a business owner or manager, begin to understand the real reasons why your employees are wasting time during business hours that you can begin to find ways to resolve the problem once and for all.
