Can writing a book be fun? There's a great deal of myth surrounding the solitary writer, locked away in a dank, drafty garret, slaving away to create his great novel. (Why is it always a male? Are women too smart to put up with this?) His fingers bleeding. His stomach grumbling. An empty whiskey bottle rolling around the floor. Oh, yes, and French Jazz music floating up from the cafA© next door. Of course, the only accurate thing in that whole paragraph was the word solitary. On second thought, right now my daughter is in the kitchen laughing with her friend. My son is sitting beside me laughing with his friends -- must be a good game. And the closest I am to hearing French Jazz is the "Steampunk Revolution" by Abney Park that I'm playing while I work. Hardly the same. At least not according to my French (Canadian) wife. Needless to say, it's all a myth. You don't have to suffer to write. In fact, making writing fun is one of the keys to writing a book. Why? Because you will seldom make money on your first book. If your first book is so difficult and unpleasant to write, you'll never write the second or third or tenth book. And those are the ones that make writing a book worthwhile. At least in the eyes of your bank manager! One of the problems I have, in fact, is that I enjoy writing too much. And while I avoid writing when I can, when I'm writing I'm totally focused. So much so that I've been known to hurt myself from the physical aspects of writing. Bleeding fingers -- no, fingers so bruised I can't touch anything -- yes. (Gotta learn to take a break once in a while.) So how do you make writing a book fun? There are several answers to that question but here are four of the ones I like to concentrate on: 1. Make writing easy 2. Make your writing hole comfortable 3. Write books that you want to read 4. Give yourself a reward Let's face it. Writing a book can be about as much fun as hitting your hand with a 10-pound sledgehammer. But it doesn't have to be that way. Unfortunately, most of us have been taught to write using a technology that is better suited to prevention than to helping the process along. I'm speaking, of course, about outlining then writing then editing then rewriting. Trying to write a book this way has killed more efforts than any other issue. On the other hand, there are methods that can make writing a book much easier by separating the heavy lifting (writing the structure) from the polishing (editing) and the painting (writing the words). We all need a writing hole. Somewhere we can go to get our writing done. In fact, we probably need more than one given that our concentration abilities change. But wherever you are writing you need to have it comfortable for you -- mentally as well as physically. That means a great chair. A desk at the right height for writing. And the level of silence you need. Having the phone on answering machine helps too. Have you ever done something that you really, really hate? Not a lot of fun, was it? Writing a book is no different. If you are freelance writing or ghostwriting, you won't have a choice about which books you write. However, for the rest of your books, you will have a choice. And it's always more enjoyable to write if you like the subject. And life's too short to waste it writing a book that you hate. Besides, your writing will show that you aren't happy. So pick a topic that you enjoy. Finally, one trick that you can do is to give yourself a reward. Writing is hard work. No matter how much fun you make it. So give a reward for the hard work. A dinner out with your significant other when you finish the book. A cookie when you finish the chapter. A swim when you've finished the chapters you've scheduled for today. It really doesn't matter what the reward is as long as you value it. thesis service
