When talking about wildlife in the Maldives, the first thing that comes to mind is its famed wildlife below water. On the other hand the country has hardly any land mass to support a diversity of terrestrial flora and fauna. The flying fox and a species of endemic shrew, rats, cats, goats and mice that have come with human habitation are the mammals found here. No dogs are allowed in the Maldives. Around 165 varieties of mostly Eurasian migratory birds inhabit the islands from time to time. Some frigate birds, noddies, the Audubon's shearwater, the white tailed tropic bird and the fairy tern raise their young around the islands. Crows, the koel, the white breasted water hen and several varieties of heron among which is the large grey heron are some of the more common avifauna here. The flora on the islands is determined by the coral sands and their salinity. Coconut palms, screw pine, banyan, breadfruit trees and shrubs are found in most of the larger islands while mangroves are found in a few marshy areas and in brackish water. Different species of grass and sedge grow along the shoreline on some islands. Several varieties of tropical fruit and vegetables, some cereals, tubers, tropical flowers and casuarinas are part of the cultivated flora.
