BEDFORD -- George Allen received a small but friendly reception that includeda confident endorsement from Del. Lacey Putney Friday when the U.S.Senate candidate brought his "send a message" tour intoone of Virginia"s most Republican counties. His first stop in Bedford was a Bridge Street flower shop owned byRicky Wilkerson, who told Allen he "needs the government toget off my back and out of my pocket." Allen urged about 30 people who listened to his remarks in BedfordCounty"s administration building to help turn out voters forthe June 12 Republican primary and "send a message toPresident Obama and Tim Kaine and their liberal Washington alliesthat we in Virginia envision a better future." Allen, who must get past three opponents in the primary before hecan face Democrat Timothy M. Kaine in the November election, saidhe"s worried about complacency among Republicans in theprimary.
"Half the folks don"t even know there is aprimary," Allen said. Kaine"s campaign said Virginians already receivedAllen"s message during the six years he spent in the Senatebefore losing a 2006 re-election bid to Democrat Jim Webb. "He voted to turn a record surplus to a massive deficit, andhelped bring our economy to near collapse," said Kaine presssecretary Lily Adams. Allen faces three rivals in the primary: Chesterfield County teaparty activist Jamie Radtke; Chesapeake minister E.W.
Jackson, andstate Del. Robert G. Marshall, R-Prince William. Several local Republican officials supported Allen in Bedford,including Sheriff Mike Brown, Del.
Scott Garrett, R-Lynchburg, andstate Sen. Ralph Smith, R-Roanoke. Putney, I-Bedford and Virginia"s longest-serving legislator,told the crowd that Allen is "one of us." He said itwas a shock when Allen lost in 2006, because he had accomplishedmany things during a term as governor from 1994-98. "When you see that happen to a leader who gets the job done,it"s hard to deal with it," Putney said. "But the time has come now that we are going to deal with it.
"I am confident that he is going to be the winner,"Putney said. "And, what is going to happen in November withhim is going to be not only important to us in Virginia, but towhat is coming in this country." Allen"s two-week "message" tour began Thursday inMount Jackson and came to Lexington Friday before his stop inBedford. It continues today in Abingdon.
