Universal's "Snow White and theHuntsman" took a fairytale-like win at the weekend North Americabox office with a better-than-expected debut of 56.2 million U.S.dollars, according to studio estimates released by Hollywood.com onSunday. This was the fourth-highest debut this year behind "The Avengers,""The Hunger Games" and "The Lorax," and above last weekend's "Menin Black 3." The film also performed well internationally in 45 territories,taking in 39.3 million dollars for a worldwide total of 95.6million dollars. The dark interpretation of the classic fairytale stars " Twilight"star Kristen Stewart as Snow White, "The Avengers" hero ChrisHemsworth as the Huntsman, and Oscar-winner Charlize Theron as EvilQueen. Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood.com, said"there's a little something for everyone, with a strong female leadand plenty of 'Lord of the Rings'-style action." The film attracted primarily to women, who made up 53 percent ofthe audience, and those over the age of 30, who made up 52 percentof the audience. "Snow White's" performance was well enough to suck big-budget " Menin Black 3," which took the throne from "The Avengers" lastweekend.
Sony's 3D threequel "Men in Black 3," reuniting Will Smith's AgentJ and Tommy Lee Jones' Agent K ten years after they saved the earthlast time, finished a decent second place at the weekend with 29.3million dollars and a 10-day total of 112.3 million dollars. But the film's mega-star Will Smith, having left the big screen forthree years, did not manage to beat rising female star Stewart thistime. Marvel Studios' record-breaking "The Avengers," distributed by WaltDisney Co. was really a huge success. Although it was in the thirdwith 20.3 million dollars on the list of box office at the weekend,it surpassed "The Dark Knight" to become the third highest grossingfilm of all-time in North America, just after just 29 days of itsrelease.

Another breathtakingly good news was that on a global basis, " TheAvengers" has replaced Harry Potter's finale "Harry Potter and theDeathly Hallows Part 2," which stands at 1.328 billion dollars, toclimb to the all-time third place with a worldwide grossing of1.355 billion dollars, only behind James Cameron's "Avatar" and "Titanic." In addition, "The Avengers" wound up accounting for 52 percent ofdomestic earnings in May. The previous record for highest monthlyshare was 2002's Spider-Man with 37.4 percent.
The amazing performance of "Snow White" has eased Universal sinceits last big-budget sci-fi action film "Battleship" has taken amuch disappointing 55.1 million dollars after three weeks in U.S.and Canadian theaters. The film was at the fourth spot with 4.8million dollars at the weekend. Paramount's comedy "The Dictator," starring Sacha Baron Cohen wasfifth with 4.7 million dollars and three-week total of 50.8 milliondollars in theaters. Top ten movies at the box office this weekend also included " TheBest Exotic Marigold Hotel" (4.6 million dollars), "What to ExpectWhen You're Expecting" (4.43 million dollars), "Dark Shadows" (3.86million dollars), "Chernobyl Diaries" (3.05 million dollars), and"For Greater Glory" (1.8 million dollars).
