Whether hiring a professional designer to create a website or doing it in-house, it is important to understand that SEO can be greatly affected by the way it is created. It it essential to know ahead of time whether a developer understands search engine optimization and its implementation. Some professionals who call themselves internet creators yet have little SEO experience may be more concerned with coming up with a unique, creative design which in too many cases is in direct opposition to good optimization methods. On the flip side, some programmers with little design experience might achieve good SEO and have an ugly website. Having an impressive internet location that incorporates both good design and good optimization is always the goal, requiring knowledge in both areas to get it right. Whether a developer is experienced or not, there are some mistakes that can be made which should be avoided to prevent a negative effect on SEO efforts. Keyword Overuse - There was a time when using as many keywords as possible helped get pages indexed. Because of the number of spam websites that existed based on this idea, Google and other browsers created new algorithms to eliminate just that kind of thing. In actuality, keyword stuffing now will more likely result in a website being flagged as spam and even banned from search engines. Java or Flash Overuse - The use of a lot of Flash or JavaScript does not index as well for two main reasons: the information is too complex for spiders to index and goes mostly unseen; and Flash or Java can slow page loading, repelling traffic instead of attracting it which works directly against SEO. If it is absolutely necessary to use such elements, use them as little as possible and consider providing an HTML-only version. Images Instead of Text - This goes directly against what internet designers have been taught about using images instead of text in hard-to-code areas like menus and headers. It does easily create a visual page; however, it does nothing for SEO as the internet spiders cannot read images. With the advent of Google fonts and other attractive typography, there are few valid reasons to use images to replace text. Dynamic URL Use - Using dynamic URLs can make website work easier, especially for hundreds or thousands of pages being added. The problem is that browsers do not see all these different pages because when a hundred different of them all have the same main URL except the last few characters, browsers interpret them as one or at best, sees an index page only for all of them. Static URLs are unique, individual ones for each page that do not change based on product number or search query only. While it will take longer to create a static URL for every web location, doing so increases the chances of a website being indexed by each individual pages, making the use of static URLs very valuable. Sloppy Code - Many times it is possible to add additional code to change how a website performs; however, without understanding the correct way to do this, a lot of unnecessary, cumbersome HTML may be created. Even though a page looks and acts right, excess and incorrectly added code slows down indexing as web spiders then have to crawl through all of that to find the correct code. With the way in which HTML and CSS are continually changing, old code can also do the same thing. Websites with up-to-date, clean code are always going to perform better. While these points are not the only concerns regarding SEO, they are some important ones illustrating primary mistakes that are made affecting the proper functioning of search engine optimization. Avoiding these mistakes will help prevent great design from working against SEO efforts and destroy the whole person of a great website in the first place!
