People fool themselves into believing many ideas. "I've got writer's block." "I'm unable to write." These beliefs are illusions. You can write, just as you can speak. The power behind "writer's block" only exists if you believe it exists. And this supposed problem isn't helped by many of the "solve/fix writer's block" articles kicking about. Treating it like a serious problem that requires serious consideration makes it stronger. You don't need to fight against it. The way to overcome this so-called problem is to realise that it isn't a problem at all. It's only a problem because you think it's a problem. It Is Lunacy Do you ever worry about being struck dumb while socialising? No. That's because the idea of being struck dumb is patently silly. The same is true of "writer's block". I think what people call "writer's block" is actually a personal insecurity concerning the quality of their writing. Nothing you write feels good enough, and in turn you may consider yourself a poor writer. This means that every time you sit down to write you're overcome with a feeling of failure and are overwhelmed with negative emotions. I think "writer's block" is actually a fear to confront those negative emotions. Mark Milan's Top Tip To Overcome "Writer's Block": Write Something (So simple that you probably feel like an idiot) If you want to improve the quality of your writing, you're not going to do so by worrying about your poor penmanship. You'll improve if you write and write and write some more. That is the particularly pernicious thing about feeling unable to write: it halts your development as a writer. Worrying won't improve your writing. Writing will. So the rational response to an insecurity about the quality of your writing is to write crap loads. That does mean confronting whatever negative emotions arise when you start writing. It's okay: they won't kill you. Say "F**k It" And Start Writing People who believe they've got "writer's block" have forgotten the joys of writing. Writing in itself can be extremely enjoyable. It's fun to let words flow from your mind, to let go of concerns about quality, grammar, or anything else. If you're constantly worrying about what you're writing, you'll miss all the good stuff. Let those nagging concerns go. Enjoy the act of writing, rather than constantly worrying about the end result. Give up the idea that everything you write has to be great first time. You can always revise it later. Skipping Over This Post? Below Is What You Want To Read To summarise, write the first thing that comes into your head - write "I have nothing to say" if you must. Write it over and over. Revel in writing nonsensical tosh. Ramble like a demented loon. Bash out words like a fist-slamming monkey from hell. Overcoming "writer's block" is as simple as that. "Writer's block" really is crazy. Anyone who thinks they're suffering from it needs to self-administer a firm slap to the face. superbessay rewiew
