IBM Monday unveiled upgrades to its line of storage products that it said adds moresupport for cloud technologies. The upgrades include the additionof compression capabilities to the midrange V7000 array and thecompany's storage virtualization appliance. In all, under its Smarter Computing Initiative, IBM announcedupgrades or new services for 12 storage products. [ Are your storage requirements out of control? "Enterprises are dealing with data that is increasing exponentiallyin both size and complexity," said Rod Adkins, senior vicepresident of the IBM Systems & Technology Group. "The enhancedsystems and storage solutions we're announcing today have theperformance, efficiency, and intelligence to handle this big data.This is smarter computing that allows our clients to organize andanalyze their data to better understand and serve their customers." The upgrades include the integration of real-time compression withthe StorWize V7000 midrange storage array and its SVC (SAN VolumeController) storage virtualization appliance. The new featurecompresses data by up to 80 percent, increasing storage capacity byas much as five times, IBM said. The compression algorithm also addresses production data, not justlow-activity data on the appliance, a dramatic change from pastiterations. The V7000 and SVC updates include the addition of support for theFCoE (Fibre Channel over Ethernet) protocol, which will allowadministrators to converge storage and common server data trafficover LANs for ease of management and lower costs, IBM said. IBM also boosted capacity on its Storwize V7000 through clusteringtechnology, that allows twice as many drives to managed under asingle interface. Now, up to 960 drives or 1.4 petabytes ofcapacity can be managed in a V7000 array. The company also added support for VMware vCenter Server, whichprovides integrated management of file and block storage withinVMware from a single interface. The company's flagship storage array, the DS8000, also got a driveupgrade that offers users 33 percent more storage capacity, alongwith a 400GB SSD (solid-state drive) option. The new SSDs, as well as nearline hard drives that are available inthe DS8000, can be ordered with self-encryption for dataprotection. IBM's storage resource management software -- the Tivoli StorageProductivity Center -- got a new, Web-based graphical userinterface. The updated version 5.1 of the software now supportscloud storage management and Cognos reporting and analytical tools. In the big data arena, IBM tweaked its high performance SystemStorage DCS3700 and DS3500 Express disk arrays, enhancing theirsnapshotting and virtualization while adding thin provisioningcapabilities. The DCS3700, a rebranded NetApp Engenio E5400 box, is aimed at bigdata environments. The DS3500 is an entry-level array aimed atsmall and mid-sized data centers.
