When two great minds collaborate, history automatically happens. It makes no difference to which period they belong or nationality, for the seeds of innovation they sow bear fruits for several years. This is exactly what happened with Florentine Ariosto Jones who was an American engineer and an erudite watchmaker and F. A. Jones, a Swiss national. Together they ventured into watch manufacturing in 1868 and founded the IWC (International Watch Company) in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Since its establishment, the company has achieved several milestones and created recognition in the international market for IWC watches. The company has the niche in making watches for the bourgeois and the elite. Such is the expertise of the engineers in this company, that they customize products according to the purpose of users. For example, the Pilot watches were especially designed for Air Force pilots. Since there are many things that need to be monitored while flying aircraft, these brands sustained strong vibrations, fluctuating temperatures and magnetic fields owing to their robust make. The IWC Special Pilot’s watch launched in 1936 is a legendary watch. It allowed the wearer to see details of every single second, and minute at any height and condition owing to its black dial and shinning hands and numerals. Stainless steel was used to make the main body and lead for the seals. With its sloping edge and shinning arrowhead index, it was easy for pilots to set flying time. After gaining the confidence of the flying fraternity, the company launched another watch in this series in 1940. This time it was Big Pilot’s Watch 52 T. S. C. Being broader in diameter (55-millmetre), it was the biggest wristwatch of that time and to date manufactured by the company. The brand made it easier for pilots and navigators to control or set the seconds timer with great accuracy. Furthermore the watch also comfortably fitted around the flying suit since it had a longer strap. The robust body and the ergonomic design of the watch proved a good example of compressing complexity into simplicity. The Mark 11 joined the league of the pilot’s watches in 1948. The hand-wound 89-caliber watch was manufactured for the Royal Air Force. It served the Royal Air Force for 30 years and became the best in the IWC Pilot’s Watch category. Recently, in 2012, the company launched a few watches of similar types with new additional features. The company is enjoying a good share of the market with their flagship products. It is no exaggeration to say that IWC Watches has understood time better than anyone else has. Even after completing 144 years since its founding, there is no drop in precision, innovation, exaltation and fidelity.
