One of the most important factors in the success of any business is the level of productivity on the part of the employees. Since the inception of the Internet in 1995, employee productivity has suffered due primarily to the temptations presented to workers when a virtual world of information is literally at their fingertips. While your workers are most likely spending the majority of their working hours using the Internet for business-related purposes, they could also be using it for everything from shopping to personal banking to reading news and weather reports to communicating with family and friends via social media. If you’re a business owner or manager, you want to be sure that your workers are being as productive as possible during the work day. In an effort in increase productivity, employers have tried everything from Internet blocking to Internet monitoring Software. Unfortunately, neither of these options is truly effective for several reasons. Internet Blocking involves blocking access to certain websites. While that may sound like a helpful measure, most blocking software blocks entire categories of websites rather than individual sites. Inevitably, some of the blocked sites will have a legitimate business purpose, and when employees can’t access them, it actually makes it much harder for them to do their jobs. Monitoring software, often referred to as “spyware,” keeps track of which sites each employee is visiting and how often those sites are visited. While this kind of information may be helpful to the manager in determining which employees are wasting the most number of hours during the workday, having that information does nothing to actually improve productivity levels. In fact, using this type of software often has a negative effect on employees’ morale once they discover their boss is “spying” on them. However, the biggest reason that both blocking websites and monitoring software are ineffective has to do with the fact that the vast majority of employees have unlimited access to the Internet 24/7 thanks to their smart phones and tablet PCs. You may be able to block websites or monitor which sites they visit on their work computers, but you’ll never be able to control how your employees use the Internet on their smart phones or tablet PCs. The only real solution to the problem of decreased productivity is to determine why your employees are wasting time to begin with. Is there a problem with their work environment? Are they dissatisfied with their jobs? Once you make those determinations, you can begin to develop effective ways to motivate your employees and begin to work with each individual to help him or her do a better job.
