Have you ever wondered how much time your employees are spending using the Internet for personal reasons during work hours? Do you believe your business is suffering because your workers aren’t as productive as they could be? Are you concerned that your employees aren’t motivated to work hard and do a good job? If you answer yes to any of these questions, you’re not alone! Business owners and managers from all over the U.S. and around the globe face these same issues. While the Internet has definitely brought many advantages to businesses, it has also brought an irresistible temptation to workers. After all, an entire world is just a few mouse clicks away – everything from shopping to online games to local news and weather reports to social media. With those types of distractions literally at their fingertips, it’s no wonder that so many employees fall prey to the allure of the Internet. If they do so on their own time, it’s not a problem. But if they waste time at work, it can have a significantly negative impact on your business. In an effort to solve the problem, many employers have tried employee monitoring or filtering websites to limit Internet access. Unfortunately, neither of these results in an increased level of employee productivity. Web Filters may limit your employees’ access to certain websites, but any worker who truly wants to waste time during business hours will find a way to do so one way or the other, regardless of what kind of Internet access he or she has. This is especially the case now that smart phones and tablet PCs have become so popular. In fact, some studies suggest that the vast majority of U.S. workers now carry their smart phones with them to work each and every day. You may be able to limit their Internet access on their work computers, but they’ll still have unlimited access through their smart phones and tablet PCs. Employee Monitoring is likewise ineffective in increasing productivity. Use of monitoring software has skyrocketed in the last few years as employers desperately try to control how their employees use the Internet. This software, often called “spyware,” is extremely invasive. Once your employees find out you’re utilizing this method to monitor their Internet use, they’re very likely to become disgruntled and resent your lack of trust in them. This, in turn, will lead to an even greater lack of productivity. In essence, using “spyware” only makes a bad situation even worse! The only real answer is to find out why your employees are wasting time and do whatever you can to fix the problem at its source. Then develop positive ways to motivate your workers to increase their levels of productivity. For more information regarding Web Filters, please visit Employee Monitoring
