For many people office is the place where they spend eight or more hours every day, five or six days in a week. If we do not use office, probably we still use some kind of business premises where we have equipment, tools or machines to work with. This article will focus on saving energy tips in the office, but people who work from home or other place can use them too. If we need to save on electricity bills in our office or working area we just need to follow this few simple tips: • First we can save substantial quantity of electricity by simply pay attention of what we are buying for our office. What kind of products or equipment to buy for our office in order to save on electricity? Always buy A, A+ or A++ energy star qualified equipment. Energy star indicates the most energy efficient appliances and products we need. This can be computers, printers, plotters, copiers, paper shredders, refrigerators, televisions, windows, thermostats, ceiling fans, and other appliances and equipment. • When you live your office, turn off the equipment mentioned above. When turned off and they are not in use they simply do not need electricity. This can result in enormous energy savings. There is a common misconception that screen savers reduce energy use by monitors, but they do not. Automatic switching to sleep mode or manually turning monitors off is always the better energy-saving strategy. • To maximize savings with an AC, turn off any time when you will be out of the office for more than 15 minutes. For savings with your laptop, put the AC adapter on a power strip that can be turned off (or will turn off automatically); the transformer in the AC adapter draws power continuously, even when the laptop is not plugged into the adapter. • Today computers are not the same as computers ten or twenty years ago. Older computers were lasting longer if they were less turned on and off. This is not truth with new computers so you can turn them off any time you do not use them. • If you need to buy new computer for your office, consider buying a laptop. Laptops are more optimized for using less electricity than desk top computers. If you use your new laptop in the next 4-5 years this investment will result in long-term savings. • Even when they are switched off, many appliances continue to draw a small amount of power. This phenomenon is known as a phantom electricity spending. This occurs in most appliances that use electricity, such as DVDs, VCRs, televisions, stereos, computers, amplifiers, CDs and some kitchen appliances. It is unbelievable but, in the average home, 75 percent of the electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off. You can avoid this by unplugging the appliance, or using a power strip and the strip's on/off switch to cut all power to the appliance. • When charging batteries, unplug battery chargers when the batteries are fully charged or the chargers are not in use. Also when charge cell phones do not live the charger plugged in the wall socket. • Do you use batteries? Many studies from established government or educational institutions have shown that using rechargeable batteries for products like cameras, CD players, cordless phones and PDAs is more cost effective than throwaway batteries. If you must use throwaways, check with your trash removal company about safe disposal options. Probably the most important way to save on electricity bills in UK is to rent or buy an energy efficient office, business premise or commercial property. When renting or buying your next office space ask for the EPC. EPC stands for Energy Performance Certificate. Every office or other type of business premise needs to have valid commercial EPC. The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is very similar to the labels provided with domestic appliances such as TVs, stereos, computers, refrigerators and washing machines. The purpose of EPC is to inform how energy efficient a property is as a building. This EPC’s will provide a rating of the energy efficiency and carbon emissions of a building from A to G, where A is very efficient and G is very inefficient. Every EPC have a section where you can find recommendations what to do to improve current rating. Some of these tips are cost effective ways to make your office more energy efficient. EPC also provide information about the rating that could be achieved if all the recommendations were implemented. This article was brought to you by Igor Gjurovski on behalf of Just EPC.
