Not long ago, I was having a philosophical argument with an acquaintance, and I asked her if she believed that science fiction writers were more intelligent or smarter than the writers of other fictional works. Specifically, are our sci-fi writers smarter than let's say detective mystery writers, spy novelists, or other intensely complicated genres? She believed that those that wrote legal thrillers, and spy novels were just as smart, albeit in a different way than the science fiction writers, for example the novelist who wrote the book; "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," which was also a killer movie - literally. Okay so let's talk about this for second shall we? My acquaintance, well, she also indicated there was a difference between cleverness, creativity, IQ, and academic smarts. It seems that many of the best science fiction writers were also researchers, scientists, and/or engineers. They certainly had a lot of knowledge in how things work, way beyond the average citizen. But even with all that schooling, does that make them smarter, cleverer, or more ingenious than any of the other top writers in the other categories? Now then, I would submit to you that writing science fiction is a little more difficult because you have to create the world, whereas the other writers are using our present world, and creating a story within it, or drawing upon the past - and history. It seems that the creative mind plus the academic intelligence combined allows a science fiction writer to do great work, and very few people can really do that. Now then, there was an interesting 3D Film Debut at the Singularity Conference in 2012 where a spokesperson in the documentary stated; "science fiction is all that's left," and that resonated with me, indeed, you know what, he is right! One could say that some of the other writers in some of those other categories do help us expand our minds, and they really make the reader think. But to take a reader and put them in an entirely new world, one they've never experienced, or even ever considered, really seems to do quite a bit to expand the human mind. I would submit to you that a good sci-fi writer is able to do that. And no, it isn't easy, in fact I've done a little science fiction writing myself, and it can be quite a challenge to put it all together. Each of the novelists who are in the top in their categories make it look effortless and as they accelerate through their career they get better and better. That is obvious if you read their older novels, and their newest works. It seems however, that one has to be fairly intelligent to go beyond what has already been done in the past, and take the readers mind into the future.
