Granite has become a popular choice for homeowners because of its durability, strength and wide range of color choices. If your granite is partially polished, avoid the coarser grit paperand start out with a fine-grit paper. Clean granite before polishing. Polishing Apply a granite polishing compound to a small section of the granite's surface. Polish with a buffing pad if you're using a circular or belt sander or soft cloth if you're working by hand in a circular motion until the granite countertop takes on a high shine. If streaks or smudges appear, take a break and allow the surface to dry a bit before continuing. If you still experience streaking, apply more polish and keep buffing. Clean granite again. Protecting Apply a penetrating sandstone sealer with a soft cloth in a circular motion over a small area. Watch carefully allowing sealer to soak into the stone, but don't allow it to dry. Buff sealer until it's wiped away leaving a shining surface. Sealers help protect granite from stains and scratches and will help your stone maintain its natural beauty longer.
