Here's another reason for getting a decent night's sleep : junk food is even more appealing to your brain when you'resleep-starved, according to a new study. People also eat more food and more fat after a short sleep,the study found. U.S. researchers who scanned the brains of 25 men and women whilethey looked at pictures of healthy and unhealthy foods found shortsleep increases neuronal response to junk food. The finding could provide a tantalizing clue to explain a linkbetween lack of sleep and an increased risk of obesity . For their study, researchers from St. Luke's-Roosevelt HospitalCenter and Columbia University in New York enrolled normal weightmen and women, aged 30 to 45. For five nights, volunteers wereallowed to sleep for either four hours, from 1 am to 4 am, or forup to nine hours (from 10 pm to 7 am). Over the first four days, the researchers controlled their foodintake. On day five, they were free to eat what they desired. "On the day that we let them eat whatever they wanted, wefound that they ate 300 calories more after a period of shortsleep, and their diet was higher in fat and saturated fat,"said principal investigator Marie-Pierre St. Onge, a researchassociate at the New York Obesity Nutrition Research Centre at St.Luke's-Roosevelt and assistant professor at Columbia. The researchers also performed functional magnetic resonanceimaging while the men and women looked at pictures of healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, oatmeal, yogurt and salmon andat images of unhealthy fare like donuts, cake, bacon cheeseburgers,pepperoni pizza and candy. Brain regions involved with reward, pleasure and addiction weremore activated by the sight of unhealthy foods after a period ofsleep restriction, St.-Onge said suggesting that, "ifyou're trying to control your weight and you want to maintain yourbody weight, it's better not to be sleep-deprived. "You have a hormonal and neuronal network that sets you up forgreater susceptibility, or succumbing to sights of unhealthyfoods." Exactly why that might be the case isn't clear. "It could be different aspects of cognitive control thatwhen you pass in front of foods that tend to be appealing you wantthat instant reward when you're under restricted sleep," St.Onge said. The study is being presented this week in Boston at SLEEP, theannual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies. The volunteers were all normal weight. "We were really lookingat aspects that would lead toward obesity and overweight," St.Onge said. "It might be interesting to see what thedifferences are between normal weight and overweight people." A related study also being presented at the sleep meeting foundinsufficient sleep appears to impair activity in the frontal lobe,the part of the brain involved in emotion, reasoning and judgment.
