As the debate heats up for the rights for or against the union of same sex marriage, religious advocates for both sides state their cases. Since the November 8th election, there have been four states that have gone through legislation with three of them agreeing to the union of same sex marriage and the fourth state refused to ban it. The next state, Illinois, is set to see the bill The Religious Freedom and Marriage Act on January 9, 2013, as events preceding this date are showing signs of force from both sides. These events are proving to be the first inevitable showdown between the advocates of gay marriage and the Catholic Church. Arguments for gay advocates are centered on the moral issue of the same civil rights for all individuals, despite one’s sexual orientation or lifestyle. On the other side, the Catholic Church urges against same sex marriage as it is an unnatural event and the power of government is to not overturn what nature ultimately intends of all of us. The Catholic Church is led by Chicago Cardinal Francis George and many others within the religious community. Not all of those within the religious community or the Catholic Church necessarily agree with the views of the Cardinal. Many religious leaders have sent letters for support and have asked for The Religious Freedom and Marriage Act to be passed. A show of support has also been noted in other states such as New York, Massachusetts, and Maryland to name a few. There are many activist groups out there that side with the LBBT community as some of their views have nothing to do with being gay or not, but instead, of human rights equality as a whole. This viewpoint shows solidarity on the subject as it takes the subjective nature out of it as it does not pertain to a specific rights group, but instead, on the rights of all persons entirely. Over-time, there seems to be a significant increase in gay rights sentiments, and many views of which have increased from outside of the LGBT community. A show of support has occurred and has become evident through these points in time as many advocates or gay marriage have a heterosexual lifestyle. This precludes the ideals that times have changed, and with that, legislation also needs to change. While this show of support is noted and extremely valuable in our cause to afflict change in legislation on the topic of gay marriage, it has to come with an eye opening of sorts for the politicians who can essentially make those changes. Our stance will not change, our actions will remain pure, and the unity that we are hopeful for will one day be evident.
