A Vancouver woman who was fatally injured while cycling to worklast Tuesday was a popular and dedicated teacher who will bemourned by many, say those who knew her. The loss of 32-year-old Amy Hurn, the head of the sciencedepartment at Vancouver Technical Secondary School, has left a deepvoid for her students and colleagues, said Debbie Pawluk, presidentof the Vancouver Secondary Teachers Association. Hurn was injured March 27 when she was hit by an eastbound carwhile cycling northbound through the intersection of East 12thAvenue and Windsor Street at about 7:30 a.m. She died from her injuries late Saturday night.
Hurn served on the executive of the teachers association, alongwith Pawluk, who remembers her as an exemplary young woman. She was a valued colleague and a dear friend, Pawluk told The Province . She was a dedicated educator and an incredible science teacher. She loved being a teacher. It s truly a tragedy. Pawluk said Hurn also served as the sponsor of the student councilat the east-side school.
She was an incredibly well-loved and popular teacher with thestaff and the students alike, she said. A Vancouver Technical Secondary vice-principal called Hurn s death a traumatic situation. The students are obviously very upset and we ve spent the entireday providing counselling services and opportunities for them totalk about it, said the administrator who didn t want his nameused in this story. We re a family of 1,650 students and about 100 teachers and wesupport each other in this difficult time. A group of Grade 8 students gathered around the front entrance ofVan Tech after school was out for the day said they were shocked tolearn of Hurn s untimely death.
Hurn, who taught Grades 8 to 12, was single and leaves behind asupportive family, Pawluk said. She was a very nice lady, said Ivy Cole. The kids who had her as a teacher thought she was really nice andcool. It really surprised me.
It was shocking and upsetting, saidCole, who did not take any classes from Hurn. I talked to her in the hallway one time. She was reallyapproachable, said Hewitt Miller. The students said many staff members were overcome with grief.
Theyadded they would like to see a proper tribute to Hurn. In a press release, Vancouver Police said the driver of the carwasn t injured and neither alcohol or speed was a factor in thecrash. The intersection has a pedestrian- and cyclist-controlled crossinglight that controls east-west traffic on East 12th Avenue but it snot known who had the right of way. Any witnesses to the accident are asked to call Vancouver PoliceCollision Investigation Unit at (604) 717-3012.
Hurn s death was the city s fourth traffic-related fatality of2012. At this time last year there had been five fatalities and forthe same period in 2010 there were three and six in 2009. ICBC spokesman Adam Grossman said there are 1,300 accidents eachyear involving cyclists and vehicles in B.C. On average, 10 cyclists are killed a year in traffic accidents inthe province. aivens@theprovince.com.
