E-Learning ,2013- The Year Ahead

Advertising,Business,Software
First things first, I wish all the GyanFinder users a happy, prosperous and successful new year. You might have checked this year’s predictions for your zodiac signs, sun signs, moon signs, etc. Now let’s see what the industry experts’ predictions are for this year, as far as e-learning or online learning is concerned. Apparently Morgan Stanley had estimated that smartphones will outshine the global notebook and netbook market in 2010 and will outperform the global PC market (notebook, netbook, and desktop) by 2012. As for 2013, industry analysts foresee tremendous growth in certain areas of e-learning and that certain online learning tools are going to get extremely popular. Read on to know more. Social/informal learning, mobile learning and video – these items have been quite ‘hot and happening’ for many years now – be it in the education sector or corporate sector. Despite the excitement about these learning methods, the pace of adoption has been slower than expected. Reasons are many and varied – cost issues, lack of clear-cut differentiation between formal and informal learning, unresolved technological issues, design factors, security concerns, so on and so forth. Social Learning Social networking has changed the way education is imparted and gained. Facebook, Twitter, etc., are the latest tools for stimulating learning and team work at both school and corporate levels. However, it can’t be denied that a section of the society is apprehensive about the security of tools and considers them a waste of time. That hasn’t stopped e-learning vendors from adding social learning elements to their platforms. In her doctoral research Anne Bartlett-Bragg had observed that learning with social media is ‘dynamic, learner controlled, self-directed and at times, it may even appear to be chaotic’. Furthermore, Anne jotted down the results of her research that dealt with learners’ experience of social media in learning contexts. They are (direct quote from her article): • Learners are more actively engaged – both with each other and the content, • Learners report feeling more empowered, and • Learners demonstrate deeper levels of critical reflection. In short, social learning is here to stay! Video A visual has the strongest impact on the cognizance of a learner. A video engages multiple senses of the viewer – sight and sound – thus generating excitement, attention and perception of the concept. This fact has been established both by research and common sense. The fact that video will continue to grow stronger in 2013, is evident by the steady increase in the use of ‘digital videos’ to enhance learning worldwide. In his TED talk video, Salman Khan of Khan Academy emphasized on using videos to reinvent education3. Mobile Mobile learning, or m-learning , as it is popularly known, has come a long way. Smartphones, tablets and numerous mobile applications are redefining ‘on the go’ style of learning. To understand the future of m-learning, let’s have a look at The Masie Center’s predictions for changes and development pathways that major organizations will take in the next year. Device readiness: Making existing and new content device-ready will be the first step toward developing m-learning’s stature. A lot of employees across various organizations are using corporate and personal mobile devices. So there is a need for formatting the content for better viewing, readability, scaling and optimization. Learning mobility design: It’s imperative for organizations to create and develop design models that reflect the company’s objectives and highlight the benefits of learning through their mobile devices/applications. E-texts We are in an era of Kindle and Apple iBooks. E-text has been widely accepted and adopted. So much so that a lot of our current e-learning can be channelized into a dynamic e-book that combines content, collaboration, assessment and performance support. Digital textbooks will be empowered, thanks to the new e-reading features that smartphones today keep adding to their devices. Additionally, new multimedia capabilities will become entwined, going far beyond today’s audio/video files. Revolutionary features such as augmented reality and touch-free gesturing (on tablets) will take digital learning to a whole new level. This is a two-part blog. In our second part, we will learn about some more e-learning predictions related to MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses), Gamification, Lecture capture, some free tools and more.
