Marble tile seems to be the epitome of fashion. Anywhere that is worth going to is decorated with marble. All of the best restaurants, hotels and offices have marble bathrooms in Manhattan/NYC. Marble is so ubiquitous right now that it would seem to be a brand new trend. Nothing could be further from the truth. Marble tiling and sculptures have a long history dating all the way back to ancient Greek. The word marble derives from the Greek word marmos which translates to shiny stone. Its resistant form made it very useful in ancient days. Marble is formed when limestone is aged deep within the earth for long periods of time. It is subjected to tremendous heat pressure and the limestone re-crystallizes. This is what gives marble its distinct colors and patterns. The Parthenon, a temple built for Athena, is one of Ancient Greece’s most famous and iconic structures. It was built entirely out of white marble. The Greeks used marble in much of their architecture. Interiors rooms containing water often used marble in spas, pools and bathing rooms. This is the the predecessor to the modern day marble bathroom in Manhattan/NYC. Another marble monument made by the Greeks is the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. This is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Halicarnassus was an ancient city built by the Greeks after a Persian conquest of what is now Bodrum, Turkey. The Mausoleum is fronted with giant marble columns and has a 148 ft marble tomb at its center. The Holy Roman Empire also utilized marble in their structures and buildings. They liked to take marble from different areas that they would conquer. After a conquest in Egypt, Roman soldiers brought purple marble back home. Marble constructs were not only built in ancient times. In modern day America, the Lincoln Memorial was built to honor one of our greatest presidents, Abraham Lincoln. The statue itself and the surrounding building is made of white marble and limestone. While the monument itself was used to pay homage to our president who abolished slavery, the marble used to build it payed homage to the Ancient Greeks who invented the idea of a modern republic.
