Job Interview Follow-up That Won't Annoy Your Employers

Business,Career
“Is there such thing?” you might ask. But believe it or not, there is. Following up is an art. You cannot establish a professional relationship when you are avoiding this task forever, thinking that it will only irritate your hiring manager.

In fact, popping up in the hiring scenario every once in a while will remind your employers that you’re more than just a paper in the pile of thousand job applicants. Interview follow-ups keep you in touch if done right, and like any other art of communicating, it markets you closer to the hirers.

Moreover, if you’re curious on how the professionals do it, here are five ways to keep updated about the results of your application without making them think that you’re some John who’s desperate for the job:

1. Ask about the next step

Do this right after the interview. There are two reasons why you should do this: first, the hiring manager is waiting for you to ask it; second, you would know how long will you be hoping for the results. If the interviewer told you that they will be the ones to call you, this article is not for you. Never call them to ask for an update. But if he didn’t say anything on whether they will call you or not, it will be most advisable to do follow-ups.

2. E-mail a “thank You” note the night after the interview

This is the first step is to let them know that you appreciate their time and you’ll be looking forward to their updates. Be brief but sincere with your e-mail. It is also highly recommended that you thank everyone you met in the company on that day. All people will appreciate and remember you as a person who knows how to express gratitude for the simplest favors and efforts they have given.

3. Drop a line after a week

Keep this smooth and polite. Greet warmly and get straight to the point. If you badly want to know how the screening is going, don’t make it obvious in your job interview follow-up. Instead, just ask it out in a chirpy manner. Make sure that your call will be a breath of fresh air to the jaded HR personnel. And timing is important, never do this too constantly. The last thing that we want you to do is to turn off your hirers and make them toss your paper to the trash bin right after the call.

4. Connect with them in LinkedIn

If you really want to network for the long run, you should ask for the e-mail of people you meet along the way and request for LinkedIn connections. However before you search them in the social media, it is very important that you ask them and let them know that you’re just intending to keep in touch with great professionals like them.

5. Never expect

The thing is simple. Keep your patience while doing a job interview follow-up. Never expect or ask favors in return. Do your talking naturally and let them know every once in a while that you are genuinely interested in the job post itself and not just the benefits package.

The greatest advantage of keeping in touch with your prospective employers is not only that it raises your chance of getting hired. It also makes you establish good ties whether you get the job or not.
