For those who read Spy Novels or Detective Novels, they know that half the fun is trying to put together the clues to figure out who is the bad guy and who done it. Interestingly enough, it is the writer's job to really make you as a reader work for it, easier said than done. Still, in the end it is ALWAYS the bad guy or bad guys who did it, even if they were representing good guys throughout the story as events occurred, conflicts arose, and the plot thickened, as it most certainly always does. Creative Writing in this genre can be quite rewarding and a mental challenge, not to mention it takes a good deal of research to get it right. The story has to be accurate as in the time and place of the various scenes or events. It hardly matters if the tale is thrust into a historical fiction detective plot, or a cold war era Eastern European location in a spy novel. Keeping the reader thinking and in suspense, continually guesses, changing their mind as new information comes in, only to question their judgment, jog their memory, and have them flipping back the pages to make sure they understand what was said, the sequence of events, and the subtleties of foreshadowing. For most authors it takes advanced planning, other writers are able to keep track of it all in their heads. For me, well I recommend an outline, and some advanced character thinking to get the stereotypes correct, as in some regards believable characters make it even more intriguing. This is why I like to think of the story in my head, and then sketch a quite timeline and outline first. Indeed, the more you do this, the better you get, eventually you too can join the top authors who have these stories already thought out from start to finish, along with the twist and turns that play with the reader's mind, making them beg for more. If you have an award winning novel, your reader will be in suspense not only to figure out who the bad guys are, but also after finished, when your next novel will come out. This is how a following is developed and how word-of-mouth spreads from reader to reader as they recommend your work to their book clubs, friends, and buzz your book online.
